Third Period Comeback Lifts Colonials Past SHU

Daniel Leavens nets game-winning goal with 3:03 remaining

Milford, Conn. – A two-goal third period propels Robert Morris University men's hockey past Sacred Heart on Friday night. Daniel Leavens scored with just over three minutes remaining to put Robert Morris ahead for the first time, while goaltender Terry Shafer and the Colonials shut the door the rest of the way.

Sacred Heart took a 1-0 lead in the first. Justin Danforth, the Atlantic Hockey player of the month for January, broke free and nearly fired a shot home but Terry Shafer made a big-time save to hold the Pioneers off the board. Moments later, Danforth would have another chance, this time passing to Evan Jasper who buried the goal to give Sacred Heart a 1-0 lead 6:32 into the first period.

The Colonials generated more scoring chances in the second, outshooting Sacred Heart, holding the Pioneers to just five shots in the frame.

Robert Morris finds the scoreboard early in the third period. Zac Lynch knocks the puck away from a Pioneers player and skates it through traffic, dragging the puck on the doorstep before putting it into the net to tie the game at one apiece. With just over eight minutes remaining, Alex Bontje slid into the lane and blocked an attempt from Jasper and the Pioneers stealthy top line holding the tie score.

Another block by Atlantic Hockey's blocks leader Rob Mann turned into offense as Greg Gibson scooped up the blocked shot and passed it up the ice to Leavens whose first attempt didn't go, but the second was right on the money. Leavens sniped a shot off the crossbar from a tough angle to give the Colonials a 2-1 lead with 3:03 remaining.

The Colonials controlled the faceoff circle throughout the game, winning 47 of 76 draws. RMU was outshot 12-9 in the first period but ended up winning the shots battle by ten, 36-26. Shafer made 25 saves for the Colonials, picking up his 11th win of the season and 35th of his career.

The Robert Morris senior class picked up its' 79th win and is now one shy of becoming the winningest class in program history.

The Colonials (16-7-4, 13-4-4 AHC) face Sacred Heart (10-15-4, 8-12-3 AHC) once again Saturday at 5:05pm at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
