Rochester, N.Y. – Robert Morris University men's hockey saw its season come to a close in the Atlantic Hockey championship game, falling 7-4 to Rochester Institute of Technology.
A wild first period saw the Colonials strike first in a five-goal back and forth frame.
Greg Gibson scored just 1:25 seconds in to put RMU ahead early. RIT answered, then took a 2-1 lead on a power play goal by Greg Amlong.
David Friedmann redeemed his trip to the penalty box with a power play goal of his own to even the score at 2-2. Liam Kerins scored his second of the game to give RIT a 3-2 lead at the end of the first.
The Tigers took a two-goal lead 8:35 into the second on a goal by Danny Smith. The Colonials battled back with a goal by
Brandon Denham, cutting the RIT lead to just one. The Tigers had an answer once again, Myles Powell made it 5-3 RIT after two periods.
Powell scored his second of the game midway through the third to push the Tigers lead to three.
Matt Cope scored a power play goal with 6:58 remaining to cut the lead to two. The Colonials spent much of the remaining time on the penalty kill and Gabe Valenzuela chipped in a power play goal with 3:32 remaining to cap the game at 7-4.
With an assist on the Colonials final goal, Zac Lynch set the single-season program scoring record with 55 points and finishes his career as Robert Morris' all-time leading scorer with 156 points.David Friedmann was named to the all-tournament team after posting a goal and two assists in the championship game.Robert Morris finished the season with a 24-11-4 record and the class of 2016 exits as the winningest class in program history with 87 victories. The nine seniors have been part of two Three Rivers Classic championships, two Atlantic Hockey regular season championships and the program's first trip to the NCAA tournament in 2014 with an Atlantic Hockey tournament championship.
