Charleston, S.C. – The
Robert Morris University volleyball team concluded its weekend at The Bulldog Battle with a 3-1 loss to Morehead State on Saturday morning in McAlister Field House on the campus of The Citadel.
For the third consecutive match, senior
Arden Fisher and sophomore
Taylor Lord recorded double-doubles. Lord led the attack with 12 kills, while Fisher posted 11, and the two combined for 36 of the Colonials' 82 digs. Fisher also added five block assists and Lord tallied a service ace. Both Fisher and Lord were named to the 2016 Bulldog Battle All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the two-day event.
Robert Morris (1-2) opened the match on a high note, as the Colonials captured the first set, 25-20, but Morehead State (2-1) responded right away and took set two by the same margin.
Toward the middle of set three, RMU went on a four-point run with assistance from kills by Lord and sophomore middle blocker
Brianna Schmid, which earned the Colonials a 17-16 edge and forced the Eagles to regroup. Morehead State came out of the timeout and tied the game at 17. As both squads traded points back and forth over the next few minutes, Robert Morris reeled off three straight points, including a kill and a big block from freshman
Kendra Harlow to put the Colonials in front, 21-20. The Eagles, however, scored the next five to secure a critical third set win and major momentum heading into the final frame.
RMU made another mid-set run in the fourth and pulled ahead by three, 17-14, but MSU strung together a 6-2 streak late in the game, which helped the Eagles seal the deal.
The Colonials' home opener takes place next weekend as part of the Robert Morris Invitational on Friday, Sept. 2 and Saturday, Sept. 3. Participating teams include Bucknell, Buffalo, Coppin State and fellow Northeast Conference member Saint Francis U. RMU kicks off action versus Buffalo on Friday at 5 p.m. in the Sewall Center.
