Colonials See Win Streak Snapped at Duquesne

Robert Morris and Duquesne have traded wins over the last seven meetings, with the Dukes gaining the edge tonight

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's soccer team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end as a goal in the 59th minute lifted Duquesne University over the Colonials, 1-0, this evening from Rooney Field.

In what has become a theme to the Colonials-Dukes rivalry, the teams traded wins for the seventh consecutive meeting. Robert Morris (3-4-0, 0-0-0 NEC) held a 7-6 edge in shots at halftime, but Duquesne (5-2-0, 0-0-0 Atlantic 10) responded with 11 attempts in the final 45 minutes, including the match's lone goal.

RMU had a couple of chances late in the first half, starting with a shot wide of the net from junior midfielder Jake Cooper. The Colonials regained possession and generated another attempt from fellow third-year Corey McCurdy, but it was saved. McCurdy then stood over the ball for a corner kick; however, nothing came of it.

The Dukes scored the game-winner off an impressive display of strength from Fredrik Borenstein in the 59th minute. George Pappas won a 50-50 ball around 30 yards out and passed it up to Borenstein, who was boxing out the defender behind him. Borenstein then executed a clean turn to gain some space before ripping it past junior goalkeeper Winter Fondi.

The Colonials almost had their equalizer in the 72nd minute when junior midfielder Bayley Winkel beat the Duquesne back line into the box. Space closed quickly however, leaving Winkel little room to work as his shot was saved by the goalkeeper at the near post.

McCurdy attempted a team-high three shots on the evening. Fondi made five saves in the loss.

Robert Morris returns home this Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1:00 p.m. when it hosts George Washington in a battle of the Colonials.
