NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- Once again, the
Robert Morris volleyball team received commendable efforts from both one of its youngest members and one of its most seasoned, but it still couldn't channel them it into a coveted road result, falling 3-1 (21-25, 21-25, 25-15, 21-25) at Central Connecticut in Detrick Gymnasium Saturday.
Senior setter
Brianna Frakes compiled a match- and season-high 53 assists, only two shy of equaling her career record, to go with ten digs for her seventh double-double of the year. Outside hitter
Alyson Londot continued her memorable first collegiate campaign with her eighth double-double of 2017, coming on 11 kills and ten digs of her own.
Frakes' relief, junior
Liz Campbell, also had a red-letter day individually with a career high in kills (ten), plus season highs in total blocks (five) and points (12.5).
Meanwhile, the center of the RMU lineup showed further glimpses of better days that lie ahead. With a staggering .517 attack average that led all competitors,
Maria Alfano powered the Colonials offense with 17 digs and held her own defensively with a team-high six total blocks. Fellow first-year middle blocker
Emma Granger, a three-time
Molten/NEC Rookie of the Week, set a personal record with six aces while chipping in 12 kills and four digs and hitting .318.
The Dalton (Ohio) H.S. product became just the eighth different Colonial in recorded program history to collect a half-dozen service aces in a single match. Granger entered this weekend the Northeast Conference leader in that category and heads home with 46 altogether. Olivia Fairchild of Fordham was the national leader entering this weekend with as many.
RMU jumped out to a five-point lead after dropping the first set, but the Blue Devils (12-6, 5-2) battled back. Still, it used that second set to generate momentum offensively after a sluggish start, and the Colonials parlayed that attacking prowess into a decisive win in the third. They hit .355 and .333, respectively, in those middle two frames.
Robert Morris, the conference's team leader in hitting percentage, attacked at a .244 clip on the day.
The Colonials (9-13, 3-4) continue NEC play back inside the friendly confines of the North Athletic Complex next Friday when LIU Brooklyn visits for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
A rematch with St. Francis Brooklyn ensues at 5:00 p.m. next Saturday.
