Pittsburgh, Pa. - A pair of late goals sank Robert Morris University men's hockey as the Colonials split the weekend series with Army West Point with a 3-1 loss Saturday.
The start Robert Morris had on Friday, Army nearly replicated on Saturday. A Michael Wilson power play goal seven minutes into the game gave the Black Knights the 1-0 lead.
The Colonials came back and knotted the game in the second with
Luke Lynch's third goal of the weekend. The sophomore forward from Pittsburgh, Pa. took a
Brandon Watt pass from the corner and lobbed it in past Army's Cole Bruns less than five minutes into the second period.
Â
But that would be the last puck RMU would put past Bruns in the remainder of the contest.
Robert Morris and Army fought hard for the go-ahead goal, including a prime opportunity for the Colonials power play after Brendan McGuire took a five-minute major penalty. However, it was Army who finally broke the stalemate with 1:40 to play on an even-strength tally by Alex Wilkinson.
RMU pulled
Francis Marotte for 1:18 but didn't score with the extra-attacker and Army's Dominic Franco tossed in an empty-netter with 10 seconds to left, making it a three-point night after picking up two earlier helpers.
The Colonials outshot Army 32-21 and the game was even on most fronts, including faceoffs and blocked shots. RMU was 0-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Robert Morris (2-3-0, 2-3-0 AHC) will take on Ohio State next weekend in a home-and-home series for the Colonials first non-conference action of the season. Friday night, RMU will visit the Buckeyes for a 7:00pm puck drop and Saturday night, OSU comes to Pittsburgh for a 7:05pm start at Colonials Arena.Â
