Robert Morris Turns Tables on Terriers

Frakes, Lord Star Again in Decisive NEC Victory

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- If revenge is, in fact, a dish best served cold, the Robert Morris volleyball team will yearn for plenty more home cooking before season's end.

The Colonials (11-13, 5-4) got payback for an Oct. 7 upset at St. Francis Brooklyn with a resounding 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 21-25, 25-14) putdown of the visiting Terriers (7-17, 1-8) at the North Athletic Complex Saturday evening. RMU has won its first four matches on its temporary home court.

Senior setter Brianna Frakes delivered her third consecutive double-double and ninth of the season with 38 assists and a team-high 16 digs. Junior outside hitter Taylor Lord, after becoming the tenth Robert Morris player to surpass 1,000 career digs against LIU, chipped in ten versus SFBK to go with ten kills for her eighth double-double.

Frakes needs only 22 more assists to become the fourth different Colonial to reach 3,000 career helpers. She factored into an 8-2 tear that put RMU in command of the second set and the match altogether. The Colonials clinched that set by taking five of the final six points, including one of her three kills.

Robert Morris found itself engaged in a seesaw battle at first, enduring eight ties and six lead changes before closing the opening set on a 7-2 run. After dropping the third frame it showed no interest in letting the Terriers stick around, building an early 7-1 bulge in the fourth.

The Colonials wrapped it up on an 8-2 run punctuated by a kill and a service ace from three-time Molten/NEC Rookie of the Week winner Emma Granger. The Dalton, Ohio standout, fourth in the nation in total aces entering this weekend, finished with three and added 12 kills and a team-best five blocks, also leading the way with a .455 attack average.

Fellow middle blocker Maria Alfano continued her own solid debut season, hitting at a .407 clip while pacing RMU with 13 kills and chipping in four total blocks. Robert Morris, the Northeast Conference leader in team attack average, hit .333 in the final set and an impressive .240 for the match.

RMU now finds itself tied with Saint Francis University for the final spot in the NEC Tournament. It already owns a four-set victory over the Red Flash, the next team to visit the NAC, Nov. 3.

In the meantime, the Colonials will head to Sacred Heart and Fairleigh Dickinson next Friday and Saturday, respectively, to try and keep pace. First serve in the Friday match is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with the Saturday contest slated for 4:00 p.m.
