PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The offense came at will for the No. 10
Robert Morris women's hockey team Friday night, but sometimes patience pays equally rich dividends, as it demonstrated in its rematch with Brown Saturday afternoon.
Senior defender
Natalie Fraser, with two seconds left in regulation, upstaged goaltender Calla Isaac with her first goal of the season and first since Feb. 11 to complete a thrilling, come-from-behind 3-2 victory for the Colonials (5-1-0) and weekend sweep of the Bears (0-2-0) at Meehan Auditorium.
Isaac performed brilliantly in defeat with 48 saves, but RMU would not be denied. With time ticking away and its defense pinching,
Maggie LaGue, from the left side, sought team captain
Amanda Pantaleo on the doorstep for a deflection that Isaac knocked aside. She redirected it right to Fraser, however, who hastily snapped in the rebound from the right hash to send her teammates into delirium.
"I heard Pants yelling, 'Maggie, shoot!', so I went right to the net hoping for a rebound to pop out," Fraser said. "I just tried to bear down, put a hard shot and hope it went into the net."
Getting offense from its defense has been nothing new to these Colonials, who now have 18 combined points (4 goals, 14 assists) from their blue-liners through six games.
"A big key is keeping our feet moving and being an option for the forwards. That allows us to get opportunities for the forwards, too. It's like having a rope where everyone is tugging, pulling and moving in the same direction," Fraser explained.
Not to be forgotten at the end of the rink behind her was the tandem effort of Isaac's counterparts,
Lauren Bailey and
Elijah Milne-Price. The junior and senior, respectively, chipped in 18 saves together, and Milne-Price, the reigning College Hockey America (CHA) Goalie of the Week, earned her fourth win in as many appearances to begin the 2017-18 campaign.
"It's been really fun to play in front of both," Fraser added.
It was Brown that began the fun just a handful of hours removed from a lopsided Robert Morris win that was anything but for the hosts. The Ivy League foe proved lessons were learned by jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first period.
A power play goal by Veronica Alois three-and-a-half minutes in, followed by a Sam Donovan tally not quite six minutes later put RMU in a position similar to the one in which it found itself at Maine a week ago, but it wasted little time in rewriting that script.
Redshirt senior and fellow NWHL draftee
Brittany Howard took just ten seconds to answer Donovan, extending her career-best goal-scoring streak to six games with her ninth of the season.
"Sticking together was the biggest thing, especially in dressing room between periods," Fraser said. "We knew one of us was going to get it done."
Still, with Isaac standing on her head, that remained to be seen until the 7:21 into the third period, when Howard found left winger and linemate
Amber Rennie for her sixth of the year.
The Colonials continued pouring it on, out-shooting Brown by 20 in the last 20 minutes, with Fraser's fortuitous snipe providing the final 23-3 margin--and giving Robert Morris a shot in the arm heading into next weekend's first CHA series at Penn State.
That series takes place next Saturday and Sunday at Pegula Ice Arena, with both opening faceoffs set for 2:00 p.m.
"We're on a good high right now, and it's because we have confidence in one another," Fraser said. "It's been a big aspect to winning."
