EJ, Welsh Extend RMU Unbeaten Streak

Resilient Colonials Collect Another Point at PSU

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The hosts, once again, had an upset on their mind, but a pair of familiar faces on the No. 9 Robert Morris women's hockey team left Penn State fit to be tied.

Junior defender Kirsten Welsh notched her second game-tying goal in a row, her third such goal of the season and third overall, and senior goaltender Elijah Milne-Price stood tall with 24 saves to remain unbeaten as a collegian and earn the Colonials (5-1-2, 0-0-2) a 2-2 result against the Nittany Lions (2-5-3, 0-0-2) Sunday to conclude the initial College Hockey America (CHA) series for both teams.

In addition to forcing PSU into an uncanny fourth straight overtime game overall, RMU prolonged its overall unbeaten streak to four games and is now 2-0-3 in its last five outings at the Pegula Ice Arena.

Robert Morris now leads the all-time series 14-4-4, including an 8-1-3 mark on the road since the 2012-13 campaign.

With time ticking away in the weekend opener, Welsh had strapped the Colonials to her back by weaving her way to the left side and scoring a highlight-reel goal on her backhand. This time, with 11:39 to play in regulation, the big 5'11" blue-liner was camped out in the left wing circle, and, from her proverbial office, rifled one past Hannah Ehresmann to provide the final margin.

RMU, dating back to last season's CHA regular- and postseason title run, is now unbeaten in eight of its past nine games in which the Blackston, Ontario native registers a point.

Team and conference scoring leader Brittany Howard almost registered a pivotal one on multiple occasions, but stifling defense and a couple last-ditch efforts by the Lions on their backcheck early in both the third and OT periods bailed out Ehresmann and kept the redshirt senior off the board.

Meanwhile, head coach Paul Colontino's second line, not to mention his special teams, stepped up to open the scoring. With 8:55 elapsed in the first period and a handful of seconds on the penalty clock, Amanda Pantaleo fed Jessica Gazzola, who connected with Lexi Templeman in flight. The rookie winger drove between the circles and went five-hole on Ehresmann for a 1-0 lead on her second of the year and fifth Colonials power-play goal of the season.

With Pantaleo's secondary helper, the RMU captain now has nine lifetime points (4 G, 5 A) versus Penn State, and Gazzola would come up big again later by setting up Welsh's equalizer with a gritty play in front of the Nittany Lions' net.

Milne-Price, now 4-0-2 through the first month of her last NCAA season, made the lead stand up for the time being, matching Ehresmann's excellence with ten of her 24 saves in the first period and weathering an early storm. She expertly backed up a Robert Morris penalty kill that went a perfect 4-for-4.

The Colonials continue to boast the stingiest team defense in CHA, yielding just 2.00 goals per game.

Christi Vetter scored on an early second-period tip-in to tie things up, and Brooke Madsen snuck one past Milne-Price on a breakaway with 11:47 left give PSU its first and only lead.

Robert Morris continues conference play and concludes its season-opening road swing next Friday and Saturday with 6:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. faceoffs, respectively, scheduled at Lindenwood.
