Colonials Force Overtime, Tie Bentley 1-1

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Robert Morris University men's hockey managed to pick up a point in the weekend series with Bentley University, scoring a third period goal to force overtime and a tie. Brady Ferguson scored the game-tying goal 5:24 into the third period.

Robert Morris where the Colonials controlled much of the play in the first period but couldn't find the scoreboard. RMU outshot Bentley 13-5 in the first period and out-attempted the Falcons 27-13.

After a scoreless first period, Bentley was the first to strike. Jake Kauppila scored his third goal of the season with an assist to Drew Callin, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead at the end of the second period. For as much as RMU owned the first period, the second belonged to Bentley. The Falcons outshot RMU 14-4 including a 31-9 advantage in shot attempts.

The Colonials found the scoreboard 5:24 into the third period.  Daniel Leavens eyed up Alex Tonge who made a perfect pass from behind the net right on the stick of Ferguson who snapped home his 18th goal of the season. The point was the 45th for Ferguson, adding three points to the resumé of the junior and his linemates Tonge and Leavens, who combine to make up the third-highest scoring trio in college hockey.

Ferguson and Matthew Graham led the charge in overtime, with Graham recording three of the Colonials seven shots in the frame. Francis Marotte made 31 saves including four in overtime, bringing his save percentage to .939, second in the NCAA.

Neither team did any damage on special teams, the Colonials going 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

"We forget how hard it is to win. It's hard to win and it's easy to be average," said head coach Derek Schooley. "If you're not working, you're going to be average. We need to make sure we're working and we'll look at that this week."

"They've got to get everybody on the same page," Schooley said of his juniors and seniors. "We've got to work as coaches and work as a group to make sure that we're focused and determined. It's not going to get any easier and one point at home is not good enough this time of year."

The Colonials (16-10-4, 12-9-3 AHC) have a home-and-home series with Mercyhurst next weekend, traveling to Erie on Friday night before returning home for Senior night, 7:05pm puck drop on Saturday.
