Riverdale, N.Y. – Twelve different Colonials scored and 14 individuals contributed points overall in the
Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team's 18-8 victory over Manhattan College Saturday morning in Riverdale, N.Y.
Robert Morris' (2-1) depth shined once again in the Colonials' second consecutive victory, while Manhattan (1-2) suffered its second loss to a Northeast Conference opponent in three games.
Junior attack
Adrian Torok-Orban led all goal scorers with a career-high-tying four goals and one assist to match his career-best five points. Sophomore attack
Shane Majewski tabbed his first career hat trick and added an assist to set a new career mark with four points. Redshirt sophomore attack
Matt Schmidt scored twice and dished a helper to tie his career-high three points. Sophomore midfield
Tyson Gibson scored once and contributed two assists to match his career-best three points.
Senior midfield Alex Bohl, redshirt sophomore attack
Jimmy Perkins, and sophomore long stick midfield
Jack Toomb all turned in multi-point efforts. Toomb and fellow sophomore defenseman
Will Ewing each picked up four ground balls, while freshman midfield
Trey Arnold paced the category with six. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Heger made 12 saves and earned his second win of the season.
Robert Morris led by eight goals heading into the final frame, and increased its advantage to a game-high 11 points with three straight goals, including a man-up tally from Torok-Orban, to close in on the Colonials second consecutive win. The Jaspers added a goal before the final buzzer, but RMU still managed to capture a double-digit victory.
Similar to the first half, the Jaspers struck quickly to open the scoring in the second. It only took 16 seconds for Manhattan to tab the first goal of the latter half, which reduced the Robert Morris lead to three. The Jaspers struggled to find an answer to RMU's offense, however, and the Colonials outscored the Jaspers in the third, 7-3.
Both teams scored twice in the second quarter, but Robert Morris maintained a significant lead following a productive first period. Torok-Orban capped the first half with his second goal of the game to put RMU ahead, 8-4, heading into the locker room at intermission.
Manhattan kicked off the scoring with an early goal in the first period, but Robert Morris responded with five consecutive goals in the opening frame. The Colonials dominated the possession game, as RMU went 8-14 in the faceoff X through the first 15 minutes of action. Both teams boasted new faceoff personnel from last season's matchup, and RMU's Arnold was a major key to the Colonials' early momentum. Arnold won a faceoff and took the ball all the way to the net to score his first collegiate goal and put Robert Morris ahead, 3-1. Torok-Orban and Gibson increased the Colonials advantage to four goals, but Manhattan closed the first stanza with a goal to make it 5-2 at the end of the first.
RMU outshot Manhattan, 43-29, and forced 11 turnovers compared to the Jaspers' three caused turnovers.
The Colonials return home next weekend to host Detroit Mercy on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. in Joe Walton Stadium.
