Errors Prove Costly In Two Losses Saturday

Madeira Beach, Fla. – The Robert Morris University softball team lost two games on the second day of the Eastern Michigan University Madeira Beach Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Colonials committed nine errors in the two games and slip to 1-7 on the season with a 4-3 setback against Central Michigan and an 11-1 loss versus tournament host Eastern Michigan.

Seniors Jordan Gurganus and Stacey Capp led the effort for the Colonials. Both went 3-for-5 with Gurganus scoring two runs. The catcher went 2-for-4 against Central Michigan and drew two walks while getting a 1-for-1 against Eastern Michigan. Capp was 2-for-3 against the Chippewas and 1-of-2 versus the Eagles.

In game one, the Colonials could not overcome four errors and three unearned runs as they fell to Central Michigan, 4-3.

Lacee Collins went the distance, scattering seven hits over six innings of work. Just one of the four runs was earned as she suffered her first loss of the season.

A pair of errors followed by a wild pitch gave CMU runners at second and third and they capitalized with a sacrifice fly by Sydney Heath that scored one. A leadoff walk haunted Collins in the second inning. Allison Curtis eventually scored when Morgan Gardner singled to left field to put the Colonials in a 2-0 hole.

Sacrifice flies by Olivia Lorusso and Briana Bunner plated two for the Colonials in the top of the third inning. Kristen Pray and Gurganus scored to tie the contest, 2-2. The Chippewas regained the lead in the bottom of the frame, an error leading to one run and a double by Rachel Vieira plating a second.

A bases loaded walk to Bunner scored the Colonials final run of the game in the fifth inning.

Sophomore starting pitcher Laura Coulter was chased from the circle after 2.1 innings of work after giving up six runs, five of which were earned, in game two.

Ariana Chretien laced a three-run double in the second inning. Amanda Akles hit a three-run bomb that highlighted a six-run third inning for the tournament-host Eagles.

Gurganus walked and advanced to third on a double off the bat of Lorusso before scoring on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. The Eagles' Taylor Wagner then ripped a two-run single to center field that plated two more and gave EMU an 11-1 win.

Robert Morris wraps up play at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational Sunday, Feb. 19, in an 11:30 a.m. game against Michigan State.
