Moon Township, Pa. – A crucial save made by
Alex Heger in the final minutes of regulation, a key faceoff win from freshman
Trey Arnold, and the game-winning goal scored by freshman
Ryan Smith in overtime helped the
Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon in Joe Walton Stadium.
With the win, the Colonials (6-3, 2-0 NEC) remain undefeated in Northeast Conference action, while the Mountaineers (2-5, 1-1 NEC) fall to 1-1 in league play.
Smith tabbed a career-high four goals for a career-best four points. Sophomore attack
Shane Majewski recorded his second multi-point effort of the season with two goals. Junior midfield
Carter Yepsen tallied two points on one goal and one assist.
Junior long stick midfield
Zachary Bryant and sophomore defense
Jack Toomb each caused three turnovers and picked up five ground balls. Arnold also racked up five ground balls and went 17-25 in the faceoff 'X'. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Heger made 10 saves.
The second half featured a back-and-forth affair, as neither team led by more than one goal through the final thirty minutes of regulation. Mount St. Mary's sophomore midfield Jack Mangan scored to put the Mountaineers ahead, 10-9, with 7:50 remaining in the fourth period. Ten seconds later, Majewski responded with a game-tying goal to put the Colonials back in the game.
The Mount converted on its first three man-up opportunities, but the Colonials held the Mountaineers scoreless on the advantage late in the game, and Heger made a critical save with one second left in the fourth to force overtime. Less than a minute into the overtime period, Smith caught a pass from
Tyson Gibson behind the net, worked his way in front of the cage, and sent the ball to the high corner for the game-winning shot.
Robert Morris took a 5-3 lead in the opening frame, but the Mount defense slowed the Colonials production in the second period, and scored twice to tie the game, 5-5, heading into halftime.
RMU outshot The Mount, 50-40, and won the ground ball battle, 36-24. The Colonials forced nine of the Mountaineers' 19 total turnovers.
The Colonials hit the road next weekend for a NEC tilt at St. Joseph's in Philadelphia, Pa., on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m.
