Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University women's lacrosse can claim the pride of Pittsburgh as the Colonials land the program's first victory over crosstown rival Duquesne University, 17-6, at Joe Walton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After trading goals twice to open the game, the Colonials never trailed and rattled off 13 consecutive goals to take a 15-2 advantage, before allowing the Dukes back onto the scoreboard. Three different Colonials tallied six points each, with four players recording hat tricks in RMU's trouncing of Duquesne.
Robert Morris took a 12-2 score out of the first half, outscoring the Dukes 5-4 in the second half, holding Duquesne to just three goals until the final seven minutes and twenty seconds.
Sophomore
Maggie Stella and freshman
Annie Sachs each scored three goals and added six points, while freshman
Mackenzie Gandy scored a pair of goals and added four helpers. Sachs won three draw controls and added a ground ball and caused turnover, while Stella had two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover.
Junior
Dana Davis was once again a dominant force on both sides of the ball, leading RMU with four goals, while also collecting five ground balls, earning three draw controls and causing a turnover. Senior
Katie Breeze also notched a hat trick.
Freshman goalkeeper
Katelyn Miller made nine saves, allowing just six goals. The Colonials defense picked up 24 ground balls, just above their NCAA second-ranked average of 23.89 per game. Senior
Megan Wolfgang had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Freshman
Meghan Crouse scored a goal, picked up three ground balls, caused a turnover and won two draws.
The Colonials wrap non-conference play with a 6-4 overall record and have a bye week before Northeast Conference play opens on April 7 at Mount St. Mary's.
