Conway, S.C. – The
Robert Morris University softball team tallied the final two runs of the game but couldn't dig themselves all the way out in a 6-2 loss at Coastal Carolina Thursday afternoon. The Chanticleers run their record to 19-3 while the Colonials fall to 3-12.
Freshman
Natalie Higgins, who hit her first career home run at UNC Wilmington yesterday, swung the hot bat again on Thursday. Higgins was 2-of-3 with a double and a run scored. Senior
Jordan Gurganus, who is hitting .509 on the season, went 2-for-4 while
Stacey Capp's lone hit was an RBI double.
Taylor Bartlow also singled home a run in three at-bats.
Freshman starter
Madison Riggle took the loss as she went 4.2 innings, giving up two hits and two earned runs while walking three.
Laura Coulter accounted for the remaining outs and was charged with four runs and four hits in 1.1 innings.
Kassidy Smith, who finished the day 2-for-2 with three RBI on two home runs, led off the second inning with a solo shot that gave the home team the lead. Later in the inning, Rebecca Forbes singled to left field driving in Adriana Toro who had reached on a walk.
The Chanticleers tacked on another in the fourth when Mackenzie Budinger singled home Michaela McAuley. Three runs crossed the plate in the fifth for the home team all via the long ball. Amanda Daneker led off with a solo homer before Smith tallied her second bomb of the day, this one a two-run shot.
The Colonials finally got on the board in the sixth inning. Higgins led off the frame with a double and would later score when Capp sent a two-bagger to right center. Singles by Bunner and Higgins paid dividends in the seventh when
Taylor Bartlow's base knock through the middle pushed home a run.
Ashley Guillette earned the win for the Chanticleers as she whiffed eight and allowed just two hits in the first five innings. Devin Wallace finished off the contest and was touched up for five hits while allowing a pair of earned runs.
The Colonials begin play at the College of Charleston's Holy City Showdown Friday, March 10. They'll take on UMass Lowell and Chattanooga in a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 a.m.
