Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team is now winner of seven consecutive games after a 14-13 victory over Central Connecticut State University, keeping RMU in a tie for first place with a 4-0 record in Northeast Conference play. The Colonials will face Bryant, the team they're tied with for first place on Sunday, as Bryant ran its record to 4-0 with a 16-6 win over Saint Francis Friday afternoon.
Freshman midfielder
Annie Sachs scored a career-high five goals, including the eventual game-winner, and tallied eight points, bringing her season totals within grasp of several program records. Sachs now has 40 goals and 60 points, good enough for third place all-time, trailing the single season record by just 11 points (1st, 71 - Kristin Yoviene (43g 28a) - 2015; 2nd, 63 - Ashley Levering (13g 50a) - 2009). Sachs is five goals shy of the single-season goals record of 45 goals, set by Jenn Collins in 2006. Sachs finished her eight-point day with three ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
It was also a milestone day for junior midfielder
Dana Davis, who hit the 100 career points mark with her second goal of the game. Davis would finish with three goals, three ground balls and two draw controls. Freshman
Mackenzie Gandy scored four points with a pair of goals and assists, also winning two draw controls and collecting a ground ball.
Robert Morris shot out to an 11-4 lead in the first half but CCSU held possession for much of the second half and mounted a comeback. Sachs' scored four goals in the first half while Davis scored three. Gandy,
Thalia Zolis,
Kerri Sayrafe and
Maggie Stella each added one apiece.
The Blue Devils scored the first goal of the game which was erased by Davis' first. Sachs scored twice to put the Colonials ahead and RMU never trailed.Â
Gandy, Sachs and
Sophia Eureka scored second half goals, with Sachs' goal with 8:05 remaining becoming the eventual game-winner. CCSUÂ scored three straight to make it a 14-13 game with 2:28 to play. As the Blue Devils looked to tie the game, senior defender
Megan Wolfgang forced a turnover and picked up the ground ball to gain possession for RMU and the Colonials were able to run out the clock.Â
Both teams' goalkeepers prevented any further offensive damage. Colonials rookie
Katelyn Miller made nine saves picking up three ground balls, while CCSU's Jackie Branthover kept her team in the game, making 16 saves and collecting five ground balls. Miller is now one win away from tying the single-season wins record for a goalie Kaitlin Pentz, 11-6-0, 2014). Freshman
Meghan Crouse didn't record a point but forced five caused turnovers, picked up four ground balls and won three draws.
Robert Morris (10-4, 4-0 NEC) is now guaranteed a winning season for the fourth consecutive year. The Colonials will host fellow 4-0 team Bryant in a crucial NEC contest on Sunday at 12pm, with a pregame ceremony to honor RMU's seniors.
