Smithfield, R.I. – The
Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team was handed its first Northeast Conference (NEC) loss of the season by the Bryant Bulldogs by a score of 13-5 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in Smithfield, R.I.
Despite the loss, Robert Morris (9-5, 4-1 NEC) remains atop the conference standings in a tie with Hobart heading into the final weekend of regular-season action. The Colonials host the Statesmen one week from today.
Junior attack
Adrian Torok-Orban scored twice for the Colonials. Sophomore midfield
Tyson Gibson tabbed an assist and collected three ground balls. Junior midfield
Carter Yepsen scored, picked up a ground ball, and forced a turnover. Junior long stick midfield
Zachary Bryant recorded an assist, two ground balls, and one forced turnover. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Heger made 14 saves.
RMU exhibited its best offensive effort in the fourth period, as the Colonials scored three of their five goals in the final frame, but Bryant's control early in the game could not be overcome. The Bulldogs (8-6, 4-2 NEC) closed the game with four goals of their own to secure a 13-5 victory.
Bryant scored early in the third to start the scoring in the second half, but a put-back goal from redshirt sophomore attack
Matt Schmidt brought the Colonials within four, 6-2. The Bulldogs responded with three straight tallies to end the period ahead of the Colonials by seven.
Sophomore midfield
Shane Majewski kicked off the scoring for the Colonials on Robert Morris' first possession of the second quarter. Bryant's Tucker James beat three Colonials defenders to score his second of the day and put the Bulldogs back up by three. The Bulldogs' Tom Forsberg scored on the rebound of a shot initially deflected by Heger, and Bryant earned a 5-1 advantage, which forced RMU to call timeout. Robert Morris earned a man-up opportunity to close the first half, but could not convert.
Bryant opened the game with a 3-0 run through the first.
Robert Morris concludes the regular season on Senior Day Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m. in Joe Walton Stadium against the Hobart Statesmen. The senior class will be honored prior to opening face off.
