Hackensack, N.J. – The
Robert Morris University softball team continued to swing red hot bats as it swept Northeast Conference foe Fairleigh Dickinson, 9-5 and 5-0, at FDU Softball Field Saturday afternoon. The Colonials, now 17-27 and 7-3 in the NEC, pounded out 25 hits with every batter who played collecting a base knock.
Over the past five games, RMU is hitting .414 and has racked up 65 hits, 14 of the extra-base variety. The Colonials have scored 46 runs, an average of 9.2 per game and are 5-0 during the stretch.
Today,
Kristen Pray and
Jordan Gurganus each had five hits. Pray was 5-for-8 with a couple of runs scored while Gurganus was 5-of-10 and crossed home three times.
Briana Bunner was 4-of-7 with a pair of runs batted in.
While the Colonials bats were on fire,
Laura Coulter kept the Knights bats ice cold in game two. The Australian-born sophomore picked up her second career shutout and her first of the season. She whiffed four batters and scattered five hits to win her second game in as many days, improving to 5-12.
Gurganus went 3-for-5 in game two while Bunner collected hits in all three of her at bats. The 7-8-9 hitters in the lineup were 7-for-11.
The Colonials would score all the runs they needed in the top of the first. Gurganus opened the inning with a single and advanced to third with help from a sacrifice bunt by
Stacey Capp.
Abrielle McCartney walked, stole second and both runners scored when
Natalie Higgins singled to right center, putting RMU on top 2-0.
The first three batters in the sixth inning singled to load the bases. Capp and
Olivia Lorusso then drew back-to-back walks to force in two runs before McCartney scored another with a fielder's choice to cap the game's scoring at 5-0.
In game one, the Colonials found themselves trailing 3-1 heading into the sixth inning before they broke out in a big way. They sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs en route to a 9-5 victory.
Taryn Miller launched a three-run homer to right center, her third of the season putting RMU on top, 4-3, where it would stay. A single by Gurganus was followed by a pair of walks before McCartney knocked in two runs on a single through the middle. An error led to another run and Bunner singled in two runs during her second at-bat of the frame.
Kaitlin Ellzy struck out six batters and went the distance to run her season mark to 7-5. She scattered seven hits and allowed four earned runs.
Robert Morris returns home to host Wagner next Saturday, April 29, in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at North Athletic Complex.
