Colonials Sweep Mount To Claim Playoff Berth

 
Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University softball team secured a berth in the Northeast Conference Tournament with a sweep of Mount St. Mary's, 2-1 and 6-5, at North Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. The wins improve the Colonials mark to 19-31 overall and their 9-7 mark gives them the four-seed in the NEC Tournament.
 
Saint Francis U is the top seed in the tournament and will serve as the host of the event that runs from Thursday, May 11 through Saturday, May 13. The Colonials take on the host Red Flash in Thursday's second game of the double-elimination event while Wagner and Sacred Heart meet in the first game. Game time is yet to be announced.
 
Senior catcher Jordan Gurganus collected three hits on the day, giving her 73 for the season and setting the RMU single season record. Olivia Lorusso was 3-for-6 with a double and tallied three runs. Taylor Bartlow and Taryn Miller collected two hits each, including a two-run homer for Miller.
 
Kaitlin Ellzy kept the Mountaineers bats in check in game one, allowing just five hits and striking out five for the complete game victory. She walked just one to improve to 8-7 on the season.
 
Scoreless through four-and-a-half innings, Lorusso singled to right to open the bottom of the fifth. She moved to second on a sacrifice by Bartlow and scored when Kristen Pray smoked a 1-2 pitch into right center for a double. Miller then dropped one in behind the shortstop allowing Pray to score and the Colonials to took a 2-0 lead after five. The Mountaineers would get on the board in the seventh, but couldn't find the tying run as RMU secured an NEC playoff berth with the game one victory.
 
Game two featured 10 errors between the two teams, starting off in the first inning. The Colonials committed three miscues and issued two walks in the first, the second allowing the Mountaineers to take a 1-0 lead. Lorusso started off the second inning with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Briana Bunner to tie the game.
 
Natalie Higgins and Lorusso started the fourth with back-to-back singles. A pair of throwing errors on a Bunner grounder allowed both base runners to come home and give RMU a 3-1 lead. Miller then lifted her fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot, to right center field.
 
Mount St. Mary's tied the game in the sixth thanks to back-to-back doubles by Rachel and Lindsay Heinze scored three runs after Shea McFarland homered to start the frame.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Gurganus reached first by beating out an infield single, her 73rd hit of the season setting an RMU single season record. The senior then swiped second base to get into scoring position with one out. A grounder by Abrielle McCartney was handled by the second baseman, but her throw was off target and Gurganus came home to give the Colonials a 6-5 win.
