INDIANAPOLIS – The
Robert Morris University volleyball team wrapped up the Butler Bulldog Brawl by dropping a pair of matches on Saturday, losing to host Butler 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 29-27, 4-15) and falling to Oakland 3-1 (25-15, 20-25, 22-25, 15-25) at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
With the losses, the Colonials fall to 1-3 on the season.
Against Butler, freshman setter
Whitney Brown recorded her first-career double-double as she collected 20 assists to go along with 18 digs. She also added three service aces. Classmate
Emma Granger led the team with 13 kills while hitting at a .226 clip. Granger added three aces, two block assists and three digs. Outside hitter
Alyson Londot chipped in with 12 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double in her first three career matches. Brown was one of five RMU players to tally 10-plus digs as
Allie Yurkovich (11), Londot (10),
Mirna Sarjanovic (10) and
Taylor Lord (10) joined her on the defensive pursuit.
The Colonials took an 11-7 lead in the first set on an attack error before extending the lead to as many as six (18-12) on a kill from senior
Deja Tamlin. Butler jumped out to a 14-7 second set lead before Robert Morris tied it at 16-16 with a 9-2 run. The Bulldogs closed out the set on a 9-2 run of their own. The third set saw the two teams trade points back and forth as the Colonials and Bulldogs were knotted at 12-12. Butler then took a 22-17 lead before winning the set. Robert Morris forced a deciding set by jumping out to a 12-8 lead on a kill by Granger. The Colonials took a 19-15 lead on a service ace from Brown before Butler took a 23-22 lead late in the set. Robert Morris won the set after a number of ties on consecutive Butler attack errors. Butler jumped out to a 12-0 fifth set lead before winning 15-4.
Against Oakland, Londot was one of three Colonials in double digits in kills as she led the team with 15. She also recorded another double-double with 15 digs. Granger totaled 13 while Sarjanovic tallied 12. Granger hit at a .346 clip while adding five digs. Senior setter
Brianna Frakes totaled 40 assists in running the offense. Yurkovich led RMU with 16 digs while Sarjanovic added 11 for her first-career double-double.
The Colonials raced out to a 13-7 lead early in the first set on a service ace from Sarjanovic. After the Golden Grizzlies pulled to within 18-13, RMU used a 7-2 run to win the set. Oakland took a 10-6 lead early in the second set before the Colonials cut the lead 15-14 on Yurkovich service ace. The Golden Grizzlies pushed the lead to 23-18 before evening the match. The third set saw Robert Morris and Oakland split the game's opening points before the Golden Grizzlies took a 13-10 lead. The Colonials evened the match at 19-19 on an attack error before Oakland scored six of the final nine points to win the set. The Golden Grizzlies opened up a 13-9 lead in the fourth set before extending their lead to 21-12 and closed out the match.
Robert Morris continues non-conference play on Tuesday, August 29 when it travels to face Youngstown State. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Notes:
Granger was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 3.21 kills/set while hitting at a .352 clip.
