Colonials Fall to Fairfield to Close Mayor’s Cup

Bayley Winkel scored his fifth goal of the season in the defeat

Oneonta, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University men's soccer team closed Mayor's Cup competition with a 2-1 loss to Fairfield this afternoon from Elmore Field.

Robert Morris (0-6, 0-0 NEC) and Fairfield (3-3, 0-0 MAAC) combined for just 14 shots this afternoon, with only five of those attempts being on target. The Colonials and Stags also took a total of six corner kicks in the contest.

Fairfield opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as Ben Wignall found the back of the net. Joseph Meyer played a short ball into the box for Wignall, leaving him one-on-one with Winter Fondi. Wignall then managed to get around the goalkeeper before converting on the chance to make it 1-0.

RMU responded in the 31st minute, courtesy of Bayley Winkel's fifth goal of the season. Christian Coridon found Winkel with a deflected through ball, leaving the senior enough time to finish at the far post.

The Stags recorded the winning tally in the 51st minute. Wignall carried the ball down the left flank before whipping a cross into the box, connecting with the head of Jonas Vergin for the third goal of the contest.

Looking for another equalizer, the Colonials had a handful of chances in the final 10 minutes. Jake Cooper and Keane McIvor each had shots blocked within a minute of each other, while an attempt by Rafael Bruzual in the 89th minute flew wide of the netting.

McIvor generated a team-high three shots for RMU. Fondi made one save in the defeat.

Winkel and Cooper were named to the All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the Hartwick/Niagara match.

Robert Morris returns home next weekend as it hosts Bucknell on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 4:00 p.m. as a part of the university's Homecoming celebration.
