Moon Township, Pa. – Despite equalizing in the 82nd minute with a goal by Zac Sherman, the Robert Morris University men's soccer team was topped this afternoon by Marshall, 2-1, thanks to a rebound tally with 59 seconds remaining.
Keane McIvor provided the assist on Sherman's goal, giving him four on the season and continuing the trend of McIvor, Jake Cooper, and Bayley Winkel factoring into each of Robert Morris' (0-4-0, 0-0-0 NEC) tallies so far this season.
Marshall (3-1-0, 0-0-0 C-USA) took the lead in the 12th minute with an absolute rocket by Lewis Knight. Carlos Diaz-Salcedo carried the ball down the left flank before grounding it to the center of the box for Knight. Knight didn't give the Colonial defenders a chance to close in as he immediately ripped a shot into the upper right 90 to make it 1-0.
RMU picked up the tying goal late in the second half as McIvor used a through pass to connect with a racing Sherman, who then one-touched it under the goalkeeper's legs for his first tally of the season.
The Thundering Herd turned on the pressure following Sherman's goal and were rewarded with the winner at 89:01. Dion Stergiotis fired a shot that caught the crossbar and bounced back down in front of the goal line, leaving a big rebound for Pedro Dolabella to head in with 59 seconds left.
RMU had one last shot for a second equalizer, but Roald Aas Ravlum's left-footed volley attempt skirted wide of the netting as time expired.
McIvor led the Colonials with five shot attempts and three on goal. Winter Fondi made seven saves in the loss.
Robert Morris is back on the road next weekend as it is set to take part in the Mayor's Cup. The Colonials will play Niagara on Friday, Sept. 8 at 4:00 p.m. and Fairfield on Sunday, Sept. 10 at noon.
