Washington, D.C. – A brace from Jane Schleicher and 10th minute goal by Kristina Kelley proved to be the difference in the Robert Morris University women's soccer team's 3-2 victory over Howard this afternoon from Greene Stadium.
Robert Morris (2-4-0, 0-0-0 NEC) held a 15-12 edge in shots over Howard (1-4-0, 0-0-0 SWAC), highlighted by a 9-4 difference over the opening 45 minutes. The Colonials found the back of the net twice to the Bison's one in the first half, essentially deciding the contest.
RMU opened the scoring in the 10th minute as Kelley scored her third goal of the season thanks to an assist by Schleicher. Eight minutes later, Howard equalized with a tally from Whitney White.
The Colonials regained the lead in the 27th minute as Schleicher scored courtesy of a Kelley helper. The duo linked up once more in the 62nd minute as the junior forward registered the first brace of her career to make it 3-1.
Howard pulled within one in the 85th minute as Elexa Pierson found the back of the net. The hosts had one chance at a second equalizer in the 87th minute, but Ithoan Nosegbe's attempt was saved by Sydney Bruckner.
Kelley and Schleicher combined for nine of RMU's 15 shot attempts on the afternoon. Bruckner made eight saves in the victory.
Robert Morris is back in action on Friday, Sept. 8 at 4:00 p.m. when it welcomes Canisius to the North Athletic Complex.
