Emmitsburg, Md. – A pair of players scored their first career goals – including one coming in the 87th minute – to lift the Robert Morris University men's soccer team over Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, this evening in Northeast Conference (NEC) play from Waldron Family Stadium.
After suffering a trio of consecutive 1-0 losses, Robert Morris (5-10-1, 3-4-0 NEC) got back in the win column after nearly doubling Mount St. Mary's (2-9-4, 1-4-2 NEC) in shots, 15-8. With the victory, the Colonials pulled into a tie for fourth place in the NEC standings with the tiebreaker over St. Francis Brooklyn – however, the Terriers have a pair of games in hand.
RMU struck first in the 22nd minute with a tally from Christopher Coridon. Coridon entered 11 minutes earlier in place of Noah Elamin and made a quick impact, testing the back line with a shot inside the box. The attempt was blocked but ricocheted back to him, and he lofted it over the keeper and inside the far post for his first career goal.
A foul in the box led to the Mountaineers' lone goal in the 41st minute as Jonathan Godette slotted home a penalty kick.
The Colonials continued to put pressure on the hosts, but it wouldn't be until the 87th minute where they would find a winner. Zac Sherman put a dangerous header on goal, forcing Bobby Edwards into a diving save. The rebound found its way to Riccardo Rota, who buried it into an empty net to open his collegiate scoring account.
The RMU defense stood tall this evening, with the only shot on goal allowed being Godette's penalty kick.
Lorenzo Guagneli generated a team-high three shot attempts.
Robert Morris returns home for Senior Day on Friday, Nov. 2 at 1:00 p.m. against Saint Francis U. The Colonials will honor the careers of Noah Elamin, Winter Fond, Mason George, Kai Olguin, Owen Pearce, and Zac Sherman prior to the contest.
