Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University football team dropped a 20-7 decision to Keystone State rival Saint Francis U Saturday afternoon at a soggy Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pa. The Colonials slip to 2-6 and 0-3 in the Northeast Conference while the Red Flash move to 3-5 and 1-2 in league games.
The Colonials defense turned in its best performance of the season, holding St. Francis to just 329 yards and only 105 rushing yards. Senior linebacker
Adam Wollet had a season-high 15 tackles. Eight of those were of the solo variety and included 1.5 tackles for loss.
Jonathan Wanat tacked on nine stops and
Brady Ours had seven tackles in his first career start.
Offensively,
Jimmy Walker was 10-of-22 for 151 yards and touchdown throwing the ball. Tight end
Matthew Gonzalez had the only touchdown of the game for the Colonials, one of three catches he had on the day. The score was his 11 of the year, eclipsing the RMU single season record for receiving touchdowns of 10 set by Tyjuan Massey in 2005. Delano Madison also had three receptions for 56 yards.
Terence Stephens Jr. carried the load rushing. He toted the rock 18 times for 62 yards.
The Red Flash took the opening kickoff and rolled off 18 plays, advancing to the Robert Morris eight yard line. Ours, though, forced a fumble on third-and-one and
Tyler Lamica recovered to end the lengthy drive and keep the game scoreless through the first quarter.
Saint Francis would get on the board on their next drive as Bear Fenimore found Cyrus Holder for a 30-yard touchdown pass, capping an eight-play, 92-yard drive that started when the Colonials fumbled at the SFU eight-yard line. Eric Bofenkamp hit field goals of 32 and 39-yards on the next two drives, giving the visiting team a 13-0 lead at halftime.
The Colonials defense would stiffen in the second half, allowing just 112 yards over the final 30 minutes. Saint Francis picked up 72 of those yards on its only scoring drive of the second half. Fenimore hit Terrell Johnson to cap that drive for an 11-yard touchdown that put the Red Flash ahead, 20-0, with 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Walker completed back-to-back passes for 49 yards to
Mathew Barr to fuel the Colonials lone scoring drive, the second of which gave RMU first-and-goal at the Red Flash four-yard line. One play later, Walker hit Gonzalez in the right flat for a three-yard touchdown, the 11
th of the season for the junior tight end.
Robert Morris returns to the New England region next Saturday, Nov. 3, when it travels to Sacred Heart for a Noon kick-off at Campus Field in Fairfield, Conn.
