The Lion Sleeps Tonight: Bailey Blanks Lindenwood in CHA Matinee

Third-Period Breakthrough Allows Colonials to Win Tightly-Contested Series

PITTSBURGH -- The Robert Morris women's hockey team has struggled, at times, to unlock the potential of its offense, but that did not stop the Colonials (4-5-1, 2-1-1) from keeping their rematch with Lindenwood on lockdown.

Senior goaltender Lauren Bailey registered a 17-save shutout, as junior assistant captain Jaycee Gebhard and senior forward Caitlyn Sadowy scored in the third period for a 2-0 win over the Lions (1-6-1, 0-3-1) in College Hockey America action at the RMU Island Sports Center Saturday afternoon.

For the first time in her 1,788 minutes played as a collegian, Bailey turned in a perfect 60, sprinkling in a number of quality stops. With her first career goose egg, the 5'9" Freeland, Michigan native has allowed only three even-strength goals over her past five starts.

"It's awesome. I've been working for one of those for a while, and it finally came, so it's exciting," Bailey said. "Our team seems to bounce back after the first game very well, and they did great clearing pucks and [having] my back tied up in front."

She would be called into action early, as the first period of the finale was played on more even terms than that of Friday's series opener, with shots on goal only slightly favoring Robert Morris, 12-10.

Bailey denied Hannah Alt on a breakaway at one side of the net with seven-and-a-half minutes to play in the first, then swam over to the other side in time to stop a backdoor play intended for Megan Wagner from materializing. With just over four to go, she stopped Nicole Guagliardo during a Lindenwood power play to preserve the scoreless tie.

The Choate Rosemary Hall product thwarted Guagliardo again on an odd-numbered rush inside the first minute of the third period.

"I think shutouts are the epitome of consistency. Shutouts are like batting averages in that, over time, it shows what you're doing, that consistency," head coach Paul Colontino said. "She's been working extremely hard, and she's been able to bear down and focus every period. She's been so steady for us, and it was great to see her make the saves she had to, and a lot of them were big saves."

Bailey's senior counterpart, Jolene deBruyn, put forth a commendable 38-save effort at the other end. deBruyn kept Lexi Templeman from getting off a clean shot when the sophomore forward used her speed to create a clear path to the net 3:18 into the game.

With 7:55 remaining in the second period and Gillian Thompson in the box for hooking, deBruyn made a crucial stop on Templeman again, this time on a short-handed breakaway.

The brilliant blue-collar efforts of Gebhard deep in the Lions zone ate up the majority of the penalty clock, which expired before Lindenwood managed a single shot on goal. Her work would be rewarded, at last, with 11:02 to play in regulation.

Thompson set up a one-timer by Kirsten Welsh from the left point that was stopped, but Templeman outworked the defense for the rebound. She pushed it across the goal mouth to a wide-open Gebhard, who easily buried her team-leading sixth goal of the season at the side of the cage.

The 5'3" Plenty, Saskatchewan native is riding a three-game goal streak to close October, having moved into a tie for sixth in the NCAA scoring race with fellow CHA underclassman Natalie Heising of Penn State. The two have recorded an identical 13 points through the first month of regular-season play.

"If you watched that whole shift, you'd wonder how three more pucks didn't go in before it," Colontino said. "We have to have that poise that Jay had at the end there. We've got to find a way to grip the stick a little less tight."

Indeed, not much came easily this weekend for the Robert Morris offense, though Sadowy made it look easy in what was the turning point of the game.

She served a too-many-players penalty that the RMU bench refuted with 7:35 left in the third. After the Colonials defense, again, never allowed the puck to reach Bailey, Sadowy stole a loose puck in the neutral zone after roaring out of the box.

She sped to the left circle and roofed a shot over deBruyn for her second of the season, giving Robert Morris breathing room with 5:28 to go in the game.

"Getting that second goal was really important," Sadowy said. "They were pretty relentless, and kept battling. Up, down, it didn't matter. We just had to out-battle."

Robert Morris continues conference play next week with a Nov. 2-3 visit to RIT. The opening faceoffs at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, New York are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. EDT, respectively.

Both games can be seen live on the CHA Digital Network (subscription required).
