Schleicher’s Brace Salvages Soggy Senior Saturday Win

Jane Schleicher registered a brace in a 2-1 victory over LIU Brooklyn, with the winner coming in the 86th minute

Moon Township, Pa. – Behind a brace by Robert Morris University women's soccer senior Jane Schleicher, the Colonials defeated LIU Brooklyn, 2-1, on Senior Day this afternoon from a soggy North Athletic Complex.

Schleicher's winner for Robert Morris (6-12-0, 4-4-0 NEC) came with 4:10 remaining in regulation after LIU Brooklyn (2-13-3, 0-7-1 NEC) took control of the game in the second half. The senior forward ended the season with 13 goals, one shy of tying the school record.

RMU dominated from the opening whistle, keeping the ball in its offensive half for the majority of the half. However, it wasn't until the 27th minute until the hosts would dent the scoreboard. Kristina Kelley played a skirting ball into the box for Schleicher, who was clipped from behind from a Blackbird defender. After the foul call, the senior stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted home the penalty kick.

LIU Brooklyn used halftime to regroup and turned the tables in the second 45 minutes. Julia Schmid was forced to make a trio of saves in the 51st minute, the last coming off an attempt from Brittany Fazin. In the 60th minute, Mia Rose Daly created space in the box and headed home what seemed to be an equalizer, but Jaiden Williams leapt up at the last minute to clear it away.

The visitors would get their equalizer in the 78th minute. After another defender cleared a sure goal off the line, the rebound fell onto the foot of Meredith Hill, who would redirect it into the net.

Eight minutes later, RMU would tally the game-winning goal. Brittany O'Connell swung in a corner kick that bounced onto the foot of Schleicher, and the senior took a second to set herself up before unleashing a low liner inside the right post.

Schmid made seven saves to pick up the victory. Her save percentage of .873 is new single-season standard among Colonial goalkeepers with a minimum of 30 saves.

The final whistle concluded a special season and career for Schleicher. Her 13 goals are the second most in single-season history at RMU, while her goals per game mark of 0.72 this year is a school record. The senior ended up with 26 points, which is tied for third among single-season performances.

In her three-year career donning the Colonial colors, Schleicher owns the third slot in career goals (24) and points (52). By per-game averages, those marks both rank second at 0.48 goals per contest and 1.04 points per contest.

Prior to the game, RMU recognized the careers of its five-player senior class (Victoria Kraemer, Samantha Lackner, Jane Schleicher, Keirsten Van Horn, Anni Varjonen).

Robert Morris finishes the season with a 6-12-0 overall record and 4-4-0 mark in Northeast Conference (NEC) play – its fourth consecutive season of .500 play or better in league games.
