Mountaineers Top Colonials Despite Schmid’s Career Day

Julia Schmid made 17 saves in goal for Robert Morris, the most for a Colonial keeper since Sept. 19, 2004

Emmitsburg, Md. – Despite a career-high 17 saves by Robert Morris University women's soccer goalkeeper Julia Schmid, the Colonials fell to Mount St. Mary's, 2-0, this evening in Northeast Conference (NEC) action.

Schmid shattered her previous career best of seven stops, matching that mark after the first half. The Robert Morris (3-11-0, 1-3-0 NEC) goalkeeper then made 10 saves in the final 45 minutes, becoming the first player since Irene Petrou (Sept. 19, 2004 at Cornell) to make 17 saves in a game.

The junior was tested early, rushing up to make a point-blank stop on Mount St. Mary's (2-6-3, 1-0-2 NEC) Jaylyn Chandler in the sixth minute.

In the 28th minute, the Colonials put together their best scoring chance on the counter. Jane Schleicher raced down the right flank and into the 18, ripping a shot past Mountaineer netminder Maggie Barron. However, the ball ricocheted off the far left post and back into Barron's arms to deny the senior her 10th goal.

Mount St. Mary's tallied its first goal in the 47th minute when Maddie Tchou slotted home her own rebound.

Another highlight save from Schmid came in the 80th minute, as she leapt up to deny Jenna West's volley attempt with a punch over the bar.

The hosts added an insurance tally in the 82nd minute when Chandler found the back of the net off a corner kick.

Schleicher led the Colonials with three shot attempts, two on goal.

Robert Morris returns home to host Saint Francis U at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
