West Lafayette, Ind. – The
Robert Morris University men's basketball team concluded a two-road trip Friday with an 84-46 loss to No. 24/19 Purdue at Mackey Arena. The Colonials saw their overall record in 2018-19 dip to 3-3 (.500).
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Carsen Edwards hit a three-pointer 21 seconds into the contest and the Boilermakers (5-1) jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 10-2. The three-point shot was a key factor all afternoon for Purdue, as the Boilermakers shot 44.4 percent (12-for-27) from beyond the arc. Ryan Cline finished 5-for-7 from deep and 6-for-10 shooting overall in scoring 17 points.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Carsen Edwards, who was awarded the Jerry West Award in 2018 for being the nation's top shooting guard, was held to 5-for-17 shooting from the field, including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. He went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe and finished with a game-high 19 points, but the Colonials snapped his streak of consecutive 20+ scoring games at six dating back to last season.
GAMES PLAYED, STARTS
Senior guard
Matty McConnell appeared in his 100th career game against the Boilermakers, becoming the 47th student-athlete in RMU's 43-year Division I history to hit the plateau. McConnell also made his 91st career start, which ranks 11th all-time in school history. He needs just two more starts to crack the top 10, as former guard Kavon Stewart (2013-17) ranks 10th with 93.
LATE FLURRY
Senior forward
Malik Petteway was the lone member of the Colonials to score in double figures, as he finished with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field while knocking down both of his attempts at the free-throw line. He scored eight points in the final 6:12 of action, shooting 3-for-5 during that stretch.
STARTER TIDBITS
Senior guard
Josh Williams chipped in eight points, four rebounds and a pair of steals against Purdue but did not take a shot in the second half. Sophomore forward
Charles Bain, meanwhile, bounced back after a scoreless night @ Stetson (11/19/18) to tally seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
HOMECOMING PART TWO
Earlier this week, freshman guard
Dante Treacy had an opportunity to play close to home in RMU's 81-72 win @ Stetson (11/19/18). This time, it was rookie
Cameron Wilbon, who grew up roughly an hour and-a-half north in Merrillville, Ind. Against the Boilermakers, Wilbon finished with four points and two rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
