Lawrenceville, N.J. – The
Robert Morris University men's basketball team returned to action after a week off due to finals and suffered its fourth consecutive loss, dropping a 69-50 decision to Rider at Alumni Gymnasium.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials suffered a season-high 29 turnovers, including 17 in the first half, as the Broncs used a full-court press. Rider (4-3) turned those miscues into 33 points. On the flipside, RMU forced Rider into 22 turnovers, the second highest total by an opponent this season, but were only able to turn those into 12 points.
BEYOND THE WHEEL
A total of 62 percent (31-of-50) of RMU's attempts from the floor against Rider came from beyond the arc. The Colonials converted just 29 percent of those shots, hitting nine. Senior guard
Josh Williams scored a game-high 20 points for Robert Morris, finishing 6-for-14 from deep.
TRIPLES CONTINUE
Thanks to his six three-pointers, Williams has now hit at least a pair of triples in nine consecutive games, tying the school record held by former guard Karvel Anderson (2012-14), who accomplished the feat in his first season with the program in 2012-13.
STARTING FIVE
Robert Morris used a starting lineup of
Josh Williams,
Jon Williams and
Matty McConnell at guard and
Charles Bain and
Yannis Mendy at forward. It's the same starting lineup head coach
Andrew Toole has employed in each of RMU's 11 games this season, the longest stretch at any point in a season the same starting five have been given the call in his nine years on the sideline.
MOMENTS THE MATTERED
RMU closed its deficit to 40-30 with 16:26 to go after McConnell converted a layup, but the Broncs used a 15-3 run to grab a 55-33 lead with 9:13 remaining. Devine Eke capped the surge with a layup. Stevie Jordan led a balanced Rider attack with 17 points and also notched five rebounds, six assists and five steals.
UP NEXT
Robert Morris concludes the road portion of its non-conference schedule Friday, Dec. 21, with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.
