Slow Start Dooms Colonials

RMU falls to 1-2 on current homestand with loss to Mount

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's basketball team continued a four-game homestand at PPG Paints Arena Thursday with a 67-42 loss to Mount St. Mary's.

Junior Robinson opened the scoring with a three-pointer and was fouled on the play by sophomore guard Dachon Burke. Robinson completed the four-point play with a free throw. Burke got the Colonials on the board with a fastbreak layup before Chris Wray provided a dunk for the Mount on a feed from Robinson.

Freshman forward Koby Thomas would pull the Colonials (13-11, 7-4 NEC) to within 6-4 with a jumper before the Mount took control with a 27-0 run to open up a 33-4 lead with 5:46 to go in the first half.

During the surge for Mount St. Mary's, RMU was 0-for-13 from the field and suffered six turnovers. The Colonials suffered 19 turnovers on the contest, one off their season high of 20 that came in a 75-53 victory over Norfolk State (11/24/17) as part of the Grand Canyon Classic.

"A pretty embarrassing performance by us," head coach Andrew Toole said. "We were just way too stagnant on offense. We settled for way too many three-point jump shots, and that's not our strength. It was an embarrassing effort. There's a lot of improving we need to do."

Freshman forward Charles Bain helped Robert Morris snap its offensive drought in the first half with a layup, and Thomas would hit the first three-pointer of the contest for the Colonials with 4:08 left in the first half. Mount eventually entered the break with a 40-15 advantage.

Mount St. Mary's shot an even 50 percent (16-for-32) from the field in the first half but were held to 31.4 percent (11-for-35) shooting after the break.

RMU scored the first four points of the second half with a layup from graduate transfer Ronnie Gombe and a layup from Burke, but Bobby Planutis answered for the Mount with a dunk.

Mount St. Mary's held a 23-6 advantage in points off turnovers, outscored the Colonials, 34-20, in points in the paint and also received 19 points from its bench compared to eight for Robert Morris.

Four players scored in double figures for the Mount, led by Greg Alexander with 15 off the bench. Wray notched a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, Robinson scored 13 and Jonah Antonio added 12.

Robert Morris was led by Burke and freshman guard Leondre Washington, who each scored 11 points. Burke added a career-high 14 rebounds for his third career double-double.

The Colonials conclude their four-game homestand Saturday, Feb. 3, with a 2:00 p.m. tip against Fairleigh Dickinson at PPG Paints Arena.
