Pittsburgh, Pa. - Robert Morris University men's hockey gave more than 1,300 fans a thriller against Air Force on Senior Night, taking the Falcons to overtime, before ending the regular season with a 2-2 tie.
The Colonials got off to a hot start with a goal by
Alex Tonge just four minutes into the game. Seniors
Brady Ferguson and
Alex Bontje assisted on the goal, helping RMU to a 1-0 lead.
Ferguson's assist gave him 157 career points, pushing him ahead of Zac Lynch '16 to make him the new all-time scoring leader in program history.
RMU's hot start cooled, as Air Force took a 10-4 advantage on shots into the first intermission. The Falcons came out strong in the second, outshooting RMU 13-4 in the frame, scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead. Phil Boje put the first goal past
Francis Marotte, 9:08 into the second. Then, Marshall Bowery followed it up four minutes later to push Air Force ahead.
The score would hold through much of the rest of the game.
With 2:55 to play, and the Colonials in need of a win to keep their hopes of a first round bye alive, the seniors came through.
Timmy Moore found Ferguson for the game-tying goal, knotting the game at two apiece and sending it to overtime.
The teams traded terrific chances in the overtime period but no one was able to capitalize and the game ended in a tie.
Robert Morris (13-18-3, 12-13-3 AHC) finishes as the 7-seed and will be back on home ice for a first round Atlantic Hockey playoff series against 10-seed Bentley, with 7:05 p.m. starts.
