RMU Bats Quiet On First Day of The Citrus Classic 2

Kissimmee, Fla. – The Robert Morris University softball team was held to just three hits, all singles, in a pair of shutout losses to the Czech Republic National Team and Ball State Friday afternoon at the Citrus Classic 2 held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. Only the non-conference result against Ball State counts against the Colonials record which now stands at 3-7.

The Czech Republic broke open a scoreless game in the top of the sixth inning when a leadoff walk to Adella Weissova turned into the game's first run two batters later when Anetta Prokopenkova laced a double down the left field line. The national team's nine tacked on three more in the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of RMU miscues, with Weissova delivering a pair of runs on a double to left field.

Catcher Bridget Guiney accounted for one of the Colonials three hits, a single in the fifth, and threw out two would-be base stealers from behind the plate. Laura Coulter took the loss as she allowed just three hits and struck out four. Just one run on her ledger was earned.

Martina Blahova earned the shutout victory. She whiffed six batters and scattered three hits, all singles, over seven innings of work.

Ball State's Aeshia Miles then spun a no-hitter in the Colonials second game of the afternoon. Miles threw just 59 pitches, striking out five and walking one to run her season record to 5-2.

Haley Dominique provided the punch for the Cardinals (10-4) offense, going 2-for-4 and knocking in five runs. Four of those RBIs came on a second inning grand slam that staked her squad to an early lead. Janae Hogg led off the fourth with a home run, chasing Robert Morris starter Kaitlin Ellzy who was making her first start of the 2018 campaign.

The Cardinals tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth, the final score invoking the mercy rule at 8-0. Madison Riggle threw the final three innings of the contest and was saddled with two earned runs while scattering seven hits.

Robert Morris continues play at the Citrus Classic 2 Saturday, March 2, when they take on Fordham at 10:00 a.m. and Delaware at 3:00 p.m.
