DeLand, Fla. – The
Robert Morris University softball team will be leaving Stetson University mad as hatters after watching a two-run lead disappear and getting shutout in a doubleheader at Patricia Wilson Field Tuesday afternoon. The losses drop the Colonials record to 3-12 while the Hatters improve to 12-8.
Bridget Guiney and
Olivia Lorusso each collected two hits and two runs batted in. Lorusso had a pair of doubles in her six at bats as the Colonials were limited to seven hits in the two games with three of those going for extra bases.
In game one, Robert Morris loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first after a single by
Natalie Higgins, a double by
Abrielle McCartney and a walk to
Taryn Miller. Lorusso then laced a double into right center, driving in two runs to give the Colonials the lead. Stetson immediately responded with two runs in their half of the inning, taking advantage of a pair of walks and errors to tie the score.
Guiney came through with a two-out, two-run single through the hole between short and third to push RMU back in front, 4-2, in the third inning. That's how things would stand until the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, the Hatters' Ashly Smith and Molly McLaughlin each singled in runs to knot the game at 4-4.
Kaitlin Ellzy, who battled with her control throughout the game, would give way to freshman
Kaitlyn Clark who got the last out of the inning. The Hatters finished the comeback in the seventh with Lizzie Shubert hitting a double to start the game-deciding frame. She came home to score two batters later on a Danielle Diaz single that gave the home team a walk-off victory, 5-4.
In game two,
Madison Riggle took the hard luck loss as she scattered five hits over six innings of work in a 2-0 setback. The Hatters' Tori Perkins was her equal, however, holding RMU to two hits and striking out four to secure the complete game shutout.
Stetson got the only run it would need in the first inning as McLaughlin lifted a fly ball that allowed Kasey Fava to score. The Hatters tacked on an insurance run in the third when Fava again crossed home, this time on a single by Smith.
Robert Morris takes Wednesday off before meeting Penn for a pair of games in Tampa, Fla., beginning at 11:00 a.m.
