Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University women's lacrosse moves to 9-8 overall with a convincing 18-8 victory on Senior Day, sending out the Class of 2018 with its fourth straight winning season as a class, sixth consecutive winning season as a program.
The Colonials will be the third seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Postseason Tournament, and will face two-seed Wagner, with the games held at top seed Bryant University. Mount St. Mary's is the fourth team in the tournament and will face the host Bulldogs.
Junior
Shannon Lynch posted a record-setting performance with 8 assists, a new single-game RMU record, breaking the previous mark of 7 set by Ashley Levering in the 2009 season (4/17/09). Lynch's 8 assists came along with a goal for a 9-point game, placing Lynch fourth all-time for points in a single game, behind a three-way tie for first place which is 10 points. Lynch's 8 assists were also part of the Colonials 15 assists as a team, the second-most assists recorded by RMU in a single-game, with the record of 17 held by the 2009 Colonials in a win over Saint Francis on April 17. Lynch also added a pair of ground balls and caused a turnover to her goal and 8 assists.
Sophomore
Melanie Gandy and junior
Sophia Eureka each recorded hat tricks and six-point games, with three goals and three assists apiece. Gandy added a caused turnover and ground ball to that stat line, and Eureka picked up 3 draw controls and a ground ball as well.
Senior
Niki Grillon hit her stride this weekend, scoring a hat trick in Sunday's Senior Day win, her second consecutive game with a hat trick, the first two of her career.
Senior
Dana Davis scored a free position goal and posted the quintessential Davis stat line of a goal, three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers, for another balanced performance from the midfield.
Freshman scoring was aplenty with
Hannah Miller leading the frosh crew with two goals and an assist to match a career-high two-goal game and mark her first career three-point game.
Kelley Flynn also scored a pair of goals, with Flynn and Miller each picking up two ground balls.
Mackenzie Gandy,
Kerri Sayrafe and
Meghan Crouse each scored a goal, all coming as the Colonials outscored LIU Brooklyn 10-2 in the second half. Crouse,
Clio Kerr and
Thalia Zolis each contributed a pair of draw controls, adding to Eureka's three for a team total of 13.
The Colonials collected 29 ground balls, the third-highest total of the season. Freshman
Madison Griffin picked up three, as did Crouse and Davis. Sophomore defenders
Shea McArdle and
Kelly Colegrove each had two along with Sayrafe, Miller, Lynch, Kerr and Flynn.
Madison Burke picked up one and caused a turnover, running her weekend totals to five ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Colegrove, Crouse and Davis led Sunday's effort with a pair of caused turnovers each, with Burke, Griffin, Lynch, Mackenzie and
Melanie Gandy, and freshman defender
Katie Martin, all causing a turnover, for a team total of 12.
Sophomore
Katelyn Miller made 4 saves as did freshman
Mia Tornetta, who played 22:21 to close out the game. Miller now has 124 saves on the season, the fourth-highest single-season saves total in RMU history. Miller also recorded her ninth win, now tied for third most wins in a single-season, behind her 11 wins in 2017 and Kaitlyn Pence in 2014.
Robert Morris (9-8, 5-2 NEC) finishes in third place in the NEC and will take aim at the program's first championship game appearance when it faces Wagner in the NEC Semifinals at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3 at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI.
Tickets will be available the day of the event at the host site. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for those under 18/senior citizens. All NEC students with an institutional I.D. will be admitted free.
