Buffalo, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University women's soccer team fell to Canisius, 1-0, this evening from Demske Sports Complex.
In its third consecutive 1-0 decision, Robert Morris (1-2-0, 0-0-0 NEC) came out with the short straw for the second straight match. The Colonials were on target with their chances, as six of seven shot attempts made it on net, but Alana Rossi was up to the challenge to earn a clean sheet for the hosts.
Canisius (2-0-0, 0-0-0 MAAC) controlled the contest in the early going, registering its first five shot attempts. It wasn't until the 30th minute until RMU created a scoring chance as Bailey Farabaugh – making her first collegiate start – forced a save out of Rossi.
Another freshman, Chelsea Kingston, found Rossi's gloves in the 37th minute as the Colonials pushed for the opening goal. After back-to-back stops on Kristina Kelley and Kingston in the 41st and 42nd minutes, Melanie Linsmair of the Golden Griffins opened her scoring account for the season by tucking one into the right corner past RMU goalkeeper Sydney Bruckner.
Neither team could gain an advantage in the early parts of the second half, until the 62nd minute when Jane Schleicher had an attempt stopped by Rossi. Canisius responded with a handful of substitutions and regain control, forcing Bruckner into a trio of saves in the 73rd, 82nd, and 85th minutes.
After Bruckner's last save, RMU pushed on the counter and saw a Schleicher shot skirt wide of the netting in the 86th minute. Keirsten Van Horn tried her hand at goal two minutes later and generated a corner kick after a Rossi save, but the set piece proved to be unsuccessful as time ran out.
Bruckner made seven saves in the defeat.
Robert Morris continues its four-match road trip on Sunday, August 26 at 1:00 p.m. when it plays Niagara.
