Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University volleyball team remained perfect in Northeast Conference play Saturday and in the process stretched its winning streak to six with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17. 25-21) victory over LIU at the UPMC Events Center.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Head coach
Dale Starr called timeout in the first set with RMU (16-3 / 6-0 NEC) trailing, 17-14. Out of the break
Emma Granger picked up one of her team-high 13 kills on a feed from
Whitney Brown, which ignited a 10-4 rally for the Colonials.
Maria Alfano contributed a pair of kills during the surge, while
Lauren Kolenik added a pair of her own.
BALANCED ATTACK
In addition to Granger leading Robert Morris with 13 kills, Kolenik added 12 and Alfano contributed 11. Granger recorded an attack percentage of .667 against the Sharks with just one error in 18 total attempts. As a team, the Colonials hit .322, with 46 kills and just nine errors in 115 total attempts.
QUOTABLE
"You could just tell we were super excited to play today," Granger said. "I'm just so proud of our team. We're coming together as much as we can and each person, whether they're on the bench or on the court, has a huge role. To get a nice team win today is all that matters."
SET TWO
RMU fell behind again in the second set to LIU (5-12 / 4-1 NEC), 12-9, before again rallying for victory. The Colonials used a 12-3 surge to grab a 21-15 lead en route to a victory in set two.
Alyssa Hudak and Alfano each recorded four kills in the set to pace Robert Morris, with Hudak posting a .444 attack percentage thanks to no errors in nine total attempts. Overall in the match, Hudak notched nine kills and a .333 attack percentage.
SETTING THE TONE
Junior setter
Whitney Brown dished out 39 assists in the victory over LIU Saturday and also recorded her seventh double-double of the 2019 campaign, including her second in league action, with 10 digs. Robert Morris is a perfect 7-0 this season when Brown notches a double-double.
BLOCK PARTY
Robert Morris finished with 13 blocks in the victory over the Sharks, including five by Alfano. Granger notched the lone solo block, with
Emily Devlin recording three block assists and Hudak a pair.
UP NEXT
The Colonials take to the road for the next four, beginning Thursday, Oct. 17, with a 6:00 p.m. match at Merrimack. The road swing includes matches at Central Connecticut (Oct. 18), St. Francis Brooklyn (Oct. 19) and Saint Francis U (Oct. 30). RMU returns to the UPMC Events Center, where it is 8-0 in its first season in the venue, Friday, Nov. 1, by hosting Bryant.
