Colonials Handed First Atlantic Hockey Defeat

Army West Point jumps on top early, RMU can't rally in first road game of season

WEST POINT, N.Y. — A two-goal first period was enough for Army West Point to hand the Robert Morris University men's hockey team its first Atlantic Hockey loss, 4-1 on Saturday night at Tate Rink.

In their bid to start 3-0 in conference for the first time since 2014-15, the Colonials (2-3-0, 2-1-0 AHA) fell behind 2-0 after one period and 3-0 after two.

Jacob Coleman scored the lone RMU goal, midway through the third period just after the Colonials killed his tripping penalty. Coleman, a senior forward from Moon Township, Pa., has eight goals in his career.

However, that even-strength goal only cut the Army lead to 3-1. Black Knights senior Michael Wilson added his second goal of the game in the waning moments of regulation, securing a third win in as many outings for Army (3-0-0, 1-0-0 AHA).

RMU senior goalie Justin Kapelmaster stayed busy in his third consecutive start, denying 37 Army shots. His save percentage holds at .954 after four appearances as a Colonial.

Kapelmaster made 14 stops in a first period controlled by the home team, but he couldn't prevent a screened shot by defenseman Alex Wilkinson from sailing into the net at 8:10.

Army doubled its lead five minutes later when senior Wilson set off on a short-handed breakaway and stashed in a backhand deke from the lip of the crease.

The Colonials were given four power plays in the second period, but again Army was the team that took advantage of a special-teams situation. Zach Evancho's man-up goal with two minutes left before intermission put RMU in a deeper deficit.

After falling in its first game at Tate Rink since 2015, the Colonials will aim for a split at 5:05 p.m. Sunday.
