BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The
Robert Morris University men's soccer team lost its second consecutive game in Northeast Conference play, with St. Francis Brooklyn grabbing a 5-0 decision on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Poly Prep Country Day School.
With the defeat, the Colonials (3-9-2, 2-3-1 NEC) dropped below .500 in league action for the first time this season. They'll go into their final three matches of the schedule right on the borderline of postseason qualification, tied for the final spot as of the final whistle.
In terms of shots on target, RMU actually outshot the Terriers (7-4-1, 3-3-0 NEC) 3-2 in the first half, but the home side escaped with a 2-0 lead at intermission. Kieran Young scored a header off a 23rd-minute corner kick, then Nicolas Molina drove one past freshman keeper
Mike Zolnierczyk from close range in the 31st.
The Colonials had a burst coming out of the locker room, but once St. Francis netted another -- courtesy of Rahmi Shawki in the 61st minute -- the result was all but sealed. The Terriers ended up pumping 27 shots toward goal, with 11 of those going on frame.
RMU leading scorer
Riccardo Rota had a team-high four shots, three of them on goal. Senior back
Noah Elamin had the Colonials' other drive on target.
RMU will now play two straight at home, starting with an afternoon match against Sacred Heart on Friday, Oct. 25. Kickoff at the North Athletic Complex is set for 3 p.m.
