Colonials Struggle In First NEC Road Match

League newcomer Merrimack deals RMU its biggest margin of defeat since '08

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- In its first away match in nearly a month, the Robert Morris University men's soccer team couldn't find its road legs, falling 6-0 to Northeast Conference newcomer Merrimack on Friday afternoon.

The Colonials (2-7-2, 1-1-1 NEC) trailed just 1-0 at the half, but the Warriors poured on five more goals after the intermission to hand the visitors their first conference defeat in three fixtures.

With Tola Showunmi (two goals, one assist) leading its attack, Merrimack (4-3-2, 2-0-0 NEC) moved past RMU to the top of the NEC standings. Showunmi's two tallies came less than a minute apart, putting the Warriors in the driver's seat on 49 minutes.

RMU freshman keeper Mike Zolnierczyk made five saves in his fourth consecutive start, but suffered his third loss as a Colonial. He stretched his shutout streak to the edge of 300 minutes before an own goal in the 38th-minute off a Merrimack corner kick. Sophomore goalie Grant Glorioso mopped up the last 19 minutes.

Freshman Ethan Romito was the only Colonial with two shots, although junior Roald Aas Ravlum had the only shot on frame. Ultimately, the attack couldn't prevent RMU's first six-goal loss in 11 years.

Now 0-3 on the road, the Colonials will have a quick chance to put Friday's result behind them and stay in the top half of the NEC table, as they'll take on Central Connecticut at 3:30 on Sunday afternoon.
