Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University volleyball fell in its last match before next week's Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament in four sets to Long Island (15-25, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25).
Robert Morris (25-4, 15-1 NEC) saw its 15-match winning streak come to an end with the defeat, while Long Island (12-16, 11-5 NEC) moved into the third seed for the NEC Tournament and avoided a repeat matchup in the semifinals.
Emma Granger closed out a stellar regular season with 25 kills on a .561 hitting percentage, adding three service aces and five block assists for a total of 30.5 points. Maria Alfano added 12 kills, while Nikolette Zanolli recorded a team-high 14 digs and three aces. Whitney Brown and Megan Cannon combined for 38 assists, dishing out 24 and 14, respectively.
In the single-season record books, Zanolli moved to ninth in digs with 477. Granger is now five aces away from breaking her own record of 61 (2017), and needs six total blocks and 10 block assists to share the top spot in those respective categories.
Despite the loss, the Colonials completed one of the best regular-seasons in program history. RMU's 25 wins are the third most in a single season, and its 15 conference victories shatter the previous best. The Colonials won their seventh NEC regular-season title and first since 2008 by two matches.
Robert Morris hosts Sacred Heart, Long Island, and Central Connecticut on Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 in the NEC Tournament. The Colonials will face the fourth-seeded Blue Devils on Friday, while the other semifinal will consist of the second-seeded Pioneers and third-seeded Sharks. Times are yet to be announced.
