Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University men's basketball team notched its first victory at Peoples Court at UPMC Events Center Wednesday night, posting a 102-62 victory over Geneva to snap a three-game losing streak.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
RMU (2-6) scored 62 points in the second half, its most points in a half in 10 years under Pat Gallagher Head Coach
Andrew Toole, opening up a 51-31 lead less than two minutes into the second half after owning a 40-29 edge at halftime. The Colonials converted 56.1 percent (23-for-41) of their shots from the floor in the second half, including 50 percent (8-for-16) from beyond the arc.
QUOTABLE
"Coming out of halftime we tried to figure out a way to create some energy and get our guys going on the defensive side," Toole said. "We went to a little bit of pressure, and that seemed to have some success. Our guys came out a little more focused and active. It helped us create some good offensive opportunities and we were able to build that lead."
SIX PACK
The Colonials had six players reach double figures in scoring, led by redshirt senior guard
Josh Williams, who tied a season-high with 21 points. Williams finished 5-for-11 from beyond the arc and also recorded five assists and five steals. Off the bench, junior forward
Charles Bain finished with 14 points, while senior guard
Sayveon McEwen and junior guard
Jalen Hawkins each scored 13.
ELBOW ROOM
The frontcourt duo of
Yannis Mendy and
AJ Bramah each recorded double-doubles against the Golden Tornadoes (2-4), as Bramah finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Mendy contributed 15 points and 11 caroms. Of Mendy's 11 boards, nine came on the offensive glass. It marked the first time a pair of Colonials recorded a double-double in the same game since
Malik Petteway (13, 14) and
Dachon Burke (11, 10) each turned the trick in a 66-59 win @ Duquesne (11/19/17), a span of 71 games.
QUOTABLE
"It feels good to win, but we just have to keep working hard in practice," Bramah said. "Just keep competing and staying positive. We'll learn from this, watch film and keep on working."
A COMPLETE STAT LINE
Sophomore guard
Dante Treacy established a career high with 11 assists in the win as Robert Morris finished with 27 dimes against 19 turnovers. Treacy also established career highs in rebounds with seven while tying a career best with four steals.
SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
For the second consecutive year and third time overall under Toole Robert Morris eclipsed the 100-point plateau. It marks the 19th time overall in school history the Colonials have finished with at least 100 points, improving to 17-2 (.894). RMU is also 40-6 (.870) in 10 seasons under Toole when scoring 80 or more points.
QUOTABLE
"We always tell our guys about trying to play the right way," Toole said. "The game tells you where you need to be and what you need to do. Can you stay mentally engaged? Are you making good decisions with urgency? It's nice to make a shot, but are you doing things at the right speed and respecting the game? One of the ways you show respect is by your effort and your focus."
UP NEXT
Robert Morris returns to the road for its next three games, beginning Saturday, Nov. 30, with a 6:00 p.m. tip against Cleveland State at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The Colonials will also visit Youngstown State (Dec. 4) and Florida Gulf Coast (Dec. 7) during its trip.
