CANTON, N.Y. -- Although the
Robert Morris University women's hockey team saw its record-tying seven-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon, a 1-1 tie with St. Lawrence at Roos House finished an unbeaten month of November.
The Colonials, who sat at 2-5-1 exiting October, went 7-0-1 this month despite playing six of the eight games on the road. They nearly notched what would've been a program-record eight-game win streak, but St. Lawrence's top scorer Kayla Vespa scored off a rebound with 2:19 to play in regulation.
RMU junior defender
Sarah Lecavalier had scored the game's lone goal to that point, finishing a 2-on-0 rush with sophomore
Michaela Boyle to put the visitors in position for a sixth straight road victory.
The Colonials (9-5-2) couldn't make it a perfect 8-0 when leading after two periods, but they could still take solace in keeping a dangerous, counterattacking St. Lawrence team under wraps. The Saints managed just 50 shots on goal in the series, and their talent-laden power play went 0 for 5.
"Our defense corps played outstanding," head coach
Paul Colontino said. "They limited time and space all weekend."
Despite not being able to hold onto the slim advantage, RMU nearly won the game anyway in a wide-open sudden-death period. After junior defender
Emilie Harley made a couple of clutch defensive plays,
Lexi Templeman and
Joelle Fiala each had opportunities to clinch the Colonials' second OT win of the season.
But St. Lawrence goalie Lucy Morgan stopped Templeman's slot wrister and watched as Fiala's deflection of Harley's shot skipped a few inches wide of the right post.
Morgan denied 29 Robert Morris shots on goal, battling fellow freshman starter
Raygan Kirk (18 saves) to a duel. Kirk was forced to leave the game on a collision with a St. Lawrence attacker with under two minutes left in the third; sophomore
Arielle DeSmet came in to finish the game, making one overtime stop in securing the draw, which kept RMU unbeaten over the past five weeks.
""We work extremely hard in practice during the week and that gives us confidence to play how we do on the weekends," Lecavalier said. "Also, the mentality in the locker room has been great. Everyone gets up for games and we're all pushing each other to get better. We're a team that's very close and we continue to hold each other accountable. That's been a huge factor as well."
Until OT, Saturday's game was tighter than Friday's opener, which RMU won by a single goal despite doing a good job controlling play. In the rematch, the teams combined for 35 blocked shots (20-15 in favor of the Saints) and just four minor penalties, as offense was harder to come by.
Still, the Colonials managed to convert with their potent power play -- even if it wasn't exactly conventional.
Setting up behind her net 7 1/2 minutes into the second period, junior defender
Emily Curlett tossed a 150-foot aerial pass to Boyle at the attacking blue line. Boyle skillfully controlled the puck and skated in on goal with Lecavalier in tow. Lecavalier took a cross-slot pass and snapped her first goal of the season past Morgan's glove.
Lecavalier explained that, since Templeman and
Jaycee Gebhard were supporting Curlett, she felt the push to head up ice. Her instincts were rewarded.
"I stretched the zone and (Curlett) was able to make a great pass," Lecavalier said. "We caught their 'D' being too eager and had the offensive zone to ourselves."
There were several other close calls for RMU to grow its lead.
Templeman set up Boyle twice for goal-mouth chances late in the second, but RMU's 12-goal winger just missed on both. Senior captain and top scorer Gebhard fired a game-high six shots on goal, including a couple of good opportunities, but she finished without a point for just the third time in 16 games this season.
But even though the Colonials didn't score multiple goals for the first time in eight games, they held their opponent to two goals or fewer for the seventh time during this unbeaten run.
"As a 'D' corps, we did a great job boxing out and pinning players down low," Lecavalier said. "The forwards also made our lives easier, cutting good routes and being good options to break the puck out."
Next weekend, the Colonials will return home for the first time in more than a month when they host in-state rival Mercyhurst at the RMU Island Sports Center. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, and at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.
