WASHINGTON -- Juniors
Meghan Crouse and
Mackenzie Gandy each scored twice, but the
Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team suffered a 12-6 defeat Saturday afternoon on the campus of George Washington.
RMU (3-2) scored first on a strike from senior
Kerri Sayrafe, but George Washington (2-4) netted the next four goals and finished the first half on a 7-2 run. Crouse scored her first two goals of the season in a span of two minutes midway through the second half to inspire hope for a second straight comeback win, but RMU hit a 10-minute goal drought after that burst.
Due to a weather postponement of Wednesday's scheduled match vs. Duquesne at Joe Walton Stadium, Robert Morris hadn't played since a 10-6 defeat of Bucknell seven days ago. The Colonials will get back to a two-game week routine soon, starting with a home game against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday.
On a cool Saturday in our nation's capital, George Washington made it three wins in three years against RMU by limiting the Colonials to 19 shots, when they had been averaging 26.5 in their first four games. Robert Morris committed 24 turnovers as well, three more than its per-game average to date.
Two-time defending Northeast Conference Player of the Week
Mackenzie Gandy increased her team-leading total to 12 goals and 20 total points with her fourth consecutive multi-goal game. Crouse, who had missed the first two games due to injury, also had a fine afternoon, chipping in two ground balls and a draw control from her midfield position. Seniors
Sophia Eureka and Sayrafe accounted for the other RMU goals.
Junior defender
Kelly Colegrove stood out on the RMU back line, causing two turnovers and scooping up a pair of grounders. Between the pipes, junior
Katelyn Miller stopped 10 of 19 shots on goal before giving way to freshman
Jamie Keller, who made her NCAA debut late with three saves on six shots.
Robert Morris will look for a rebound at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the program's first-ever matchup with the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs. Attendance at Joe Walton Stadium is free.
