Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University softball team returned to non-conference action Wednesday with a midweek doubleheader in Olean, N.Y., against St. Bonaventure at Joyce Field.
The Colonials dropped the first contest against the Bonnies, 11-1, in five innings but rebounded to earn an 8-2 victory in the second game of the double dip and earn a split.
RMU owns an overall record of 9-24 (.272) in 2019.
// GAME ONE // @ St. Bonaventure // L, 1-11 (5) //
// CROSSING THE PLATE
The Bonnies plated a run in each of the home half of the first and second innings and grabbed a 5-0 advantage in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI double from Brooke Kane-Walker and a two-run home run by Grace Perechinsky. The Colonials got on the board in the top of the fourth. Junior
Natalie Higgins reached on an error by second baseman McKenna Holtz and came around to score three batters later courtesy of an RBI double by junior outfielder
Briana Bunner. SBU put the game away in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs, including a three-run home run from Kane-Walker.
// STREAK SNAPPED
Senior
Abrielle McCartney had her hitting streak snapped at eight by finishing 0-for-2. She reached on an error by left fielder Mikayla Short in the top of the second, advancing to third base on the miscue, and lined out to shortstop in the fourth.
// GAME TWO // @ St. Bonaventure // W, 8-2 //
// RESILIENCY
The Colonials rallied in game two of the doubleheader against the Bonnies, scoring all eight of their runs in the first three innings in taking control. That would help freshman pitcher
Dana Vatakis, who went five innings and allowed just four hits and a run while striking out three and picking up the victory from the pitching circle.
// START ANOTHER STREAK
McCartney wasted no time starting another hitting streak, doubling to left center in the first inning to drive in Higgins and give RMU an early 1-0 lead. McCartney would come around to score on an error as St. Bonaventure suffered three miscues in the field in the top of the first.
// RING MY BELL
Freshman
Erika Bell finished 2-for-4 at the plate in game two against the Bonnies, scoring a run and driving in three. She connected for her second home run of the 2019 campaign in the second inning that gave Robert Morris a 4-0 advantage. Bell finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 at the dish.
// MULTI-HIT EFFORT
McCartney finished 2-for-4 with two runs, a pair of doubles and an RBI in the win over St. Bonaventure, producing her eighth multi-hit effort of the 2019 season. She improved her batting average on the year to .299 and has hit safely in nine of her last 10 games.
