SHU Earns Sweep of RMU in Season Finale

Freshman Kristýna Malá goes 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored in doubleheader

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University softball team concluded a six-game homestand as well as its 2019 season Saturday by dropping a doubleheader to Sacred Heart at the North Athletic Complex.

The Colonials fell in game one, 4-1, before suffering a 5-1 loss in game two. RMU concludes the season with an overall record of 14-37 (.275), including 5-9 (.357) in the Northeast Conference.

RMU, originally slated to play at Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday as a makeup twin bill, will not travel to Teaneck, N.J., as the doubleheader does not impact the NEC standings.

// GAME ONE // vs. Sacred Heart // L, 1-4

THE LONG BALL

All four of the runs for the Pioneers (28-25 / 11-5 NEC) in the opening game came courtesy of the home run. Brianna Santos connected for a two-run shot in the top of the second to give SHU an early 2-0 advantage, and Katelyn Christian and Amy Petrovich each hit solo home runs in the top of the sixth to push the advantage for the Pioneers to 4-0.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE
RMU scored its lone run of game one in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Kristýna Malá opened the inning with a double to right center, and two batters later a fellow rookie drove her home. Freshman Brittney Seibert battled through a nine-pitch at bat before lacing a double to left center to score Malá.

IN THE CIRCLE
Emily Orosco allowed just two other hits in the contest other than the doubles from Malá and Seibert and improved to 10-5 overall in 2019 from the pitching circle. She struck out 10 and did not issue a walk. Senior Abrielle McCartney opened the game with a single to left to extend her hitting streak to seven games, and junior Natalie Higgins singled with one out in the fourth.

// GAME TWO // vs. Sacred Heart // L, 1-5

THE EARLY BURST

Sacred Heart scored four runs in the top of the first inning of game two to take control. Fallon Bevino drove in the first run for the Pioneers with a double to right center, and SHU also got an RBI single from Kylee Harvey and a two-run single from Alyssa Gonzalez.

PERFECT THROUGH THREE
Kristen McCann was perfect through the first three innings of the contest and retired the first two batters of the bottom of the fourth inning before walking Higgins. Senior Taylor Bartlow followed with a walk of her own, but McCann thwarted the threat by striking out freshman Erika Bell.

ALL NINE ON THE DIAMOND
Bartlow, who started the game in center field, moved to shortstop in the top of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, she moved to the circle, marking her collegiate pitching debut. She allowed a double to Bevin and a single to Petrovich before being replaced by senior Laura Coulter. Thanks to her appearance in the pitching circle, Bartlow concluded her career having played each of the nine positions on the diamond. Coulter also didn't allow either of the inherited runners to score, getting Santos to fly out to center and striking out Harvey and Gonzalez.

COMING HOME
RMU scored its lone run of game two in the bottom of the sixth. Malá opened with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball before Higgins ripped a single to center to drive in Malá. In the two-game set with the Pioneers, Malá finished 2-for-5 and scored both runs for the Colonials.
