ATHENS, Ohio -- The
Robert Morris University women's soccer team earned a dramatic win Friday afternoon, downing previously-unbeaten Ohio, 1-0, on freshman
Kayla Veloso-Lima's extra-time goal.
Veloso-Lima netted her second goal in as many games with just three minutes remaining in the second sudden-death session at Chessa Field, lifting the Colonials (2-3-1) to a satisfying victory. Fellow freshman
Colleen Sullivan earned the assist, her first collegiate point.
Ohio (5-1-0) outshot RMU 27-5, including a 12-3 advantage in shots on target. Moreover, the Bobcats entered the match having outscored their first five opponents 16-3, but the Colonials were content to absorb pressure and counter back with numbers.
It took 107 minutes of play on a sweltering day in southeast Ohio, but they eventually got their payoff.
"We had a very good game plan," head coach
John Kowalski said. "We gave away a few half-chances, but we stayed well organized defensively. We were looking to score off free kicks and counterattacks."
On the decisive play, Sullivan's 40-yard free kick settled into the box, where Veloso-Lima latched onto it. The New Jersey native then flicked the ball past Ohio keeper Sydney Malham.
RMU junior goalkeeper
Sydney Bruckner continued her strong start to the season, denying all 11 shots that made it through to her, highlighted by three saves in overtime. She has now stopped 45 of 52 shots in six appearances, good for a sparkling .865 save percentage. The Mechanicsburg, Pa., native has six NCAA shutouts, the fifth most in team history.
"Bruckner had a very good game as well," Kowalski said. "The girls played their hearts out and left everything on the field to win the game."
Also of note, Veloso-Lima's game-ending strike continued a trend for RMU: Freshmen have now scored five of the Colonials' seven goals in 2019, with first-year forward
Sheridan Reid scoring three to complement Veloso-Lima's pair. Senior midfielders
Kristina Kelley and
Nicolette Casarcia have the other goals.
Following its third extra-time game in six matches, Robert Morris will return home to conclude a two-game weekend, taking on Yale on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. from the North Athletic Complex as the Colonials aim for their first win streak of the season.
