Colonials Suffer First Defeats of Season at Youngstown State

RMU’s program-record 10-0 start came to an end as it fell in three sets to both Youngstown State and Central Michigan

Youngstown, Ohio – The Robert Morris University volleyball team saw a 10-match win streak come to an end this afternoon, as it fell to Youngstown State and Central Michigan to open the YSU Red & White Invitational.

Robert Morris' 10-0 start was tied for the longest in athletic department history, matching the 2000 football team that started and finished with a perfect 10-0 mark. The Colonials were one of eight undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division I volleyball entering today.

RMU (10-2, 0-0 NEC) fell to Youngstown State (5-6, 0-0 Horizon League) in three sets (22-25, 26-28, 21-25) to suffer its first blemish of the season.  The Penguins served 10 aces and blanked the Colonials in that department, and hit .239 to the visitors' .195 mark.

Lauren Kolenik posted her third double-double of the season versus YSU, recording 10 kills and 16 digs. Emma Granger (12) and Alyssa Hudak (11) also reached double figures in kills, but aside of them no one else collected more than three. The Penguins also avoided mistakes attacking the net, limiting RMU to three total team blocks.

Whitney Brown dished out 37 assists and Nikolette Zanolli registered 19 digs.

In the back half of today's doubleheader, Granger hit .692 with 10 kills on 13 swings, but the Colonials fell to Central Michigan (9-2, 0-0 MAC) in three sets (24-26, 20-25, 17-25).

Granger added two service aces and four block assists to go along with her eye-popping offensive numbers. Skylar Clements rejected four Chippewa attacks (two solo) and recorded eight kills, while Hudak and Erika Wilt tallied six kills each.

Zanolli led RMU with 10 digs, and Brown registered 28 of the team's 30 assists.

Robert Morris returns to the court tomorrow for its non-conference finale at 11:00 a.m. against Eastern Illinois.
