RMU Calms Rough Waters To Stop Sharks

Colonials conclude Brooklyn swing with split after win at LIU

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's basketball team concluded a two-game road trip through Brooklyn, N.Y., Saturday with a 71-66 victory over LIU at the Steinberg Wellness Center.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Junior forward Charles Bain was fouled on a three-point attempt by Raiquan Clark with 8:06 to play, and Bain sank all three of his attempts to push RMU (10-11 / 6-2 NEC) in front, 54-53. On the ensuing possession for the Sharks, Bain repaid the favor, fouling Clark on a drive to the basket. Clark converted to push LIU back on top, 55-54, at the under eight minute timeout. Those two possession were emblematic of the Saturday afternoon matinee, as the contest featured seven ties and 16 lead changes.

QUOTABLE

"The response by our guys was awesome," RMU Pat Gallagher Head Coach Andrew Toole said. "We challenged them after Thursday to step up and to their credit, they fought through adversity to pull out a great win. I'm extremely proud of their effort to get rebounds, to get stops and to fight. Sometimes effort is a choice, and our guys chose to fight and respond. The energy and enthusiasm it took to win that game was incredible."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Robert Morris grabbed the lead for good courtesy of junior forward AJ Bramah. At the free-throw line with 5:35 remaining, Bramah knocked down a pair to tie it, 60-60. On the next possession, a Bramah steal off a Clark turnover and layup thanks to a feed from Bain gave the Colonials a 62-60 edge. RMU was able to keep the Sharks at bay by converting at the free-throw line, as redshirt senior guard Josh Williams went 7-for-8 at the chalk in the final 4:14 to help seal the victory.

QUOTABLE

"Josh made some great decisions with the basketball tonight," Toole said. "He knows there isn't going to be open looks anymore. To grab six rebounds and defend the way he did, those are winning plays that we've come to expect from one of our leaders. His free throws late were huge, and it all helped us grab a gutsy, gutsy win."

DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Junior forward AJ Bramah recorded his sixth double-double of the 2019-20 season against LIU (10-11 / 5-3 NEC), finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 7-for-13 from the field and 4-for-7 at the free-throw line in reaching double figures for the 16th consecutive game. Bramah's effort bolstered an RMU bench that scored 28 points in the victory. For LIU, all 66 points for the Sharks came courtesy of the starting five.

THE SHADOWS BETRAY YOU

Junior forward Charles Bain notched his first double-figure scoring game since November by scoring 10 points while grabbing five rebounds, dishing out two assists and recording two steals. Sophomore guard Dante Treacy also reached double figures with 12 points, four boards and three assists. He shot 5-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.
