Colonials Fall After Milwaukee Breaks Halftime Deadlock

RMU was outscored 34-22 in the second half after being tied at 30 through 20 minutes

Milwaukee, Wisc. – The Robert Morris University women's basketball team showed improvement in its first conventional week of the Horizon League slate, but Milwaukee broke out of a 30-30 halftime draw to give the Colonials their third Horizon League loss in a 64-52 decision. RMU falls to 0-3 on the season, while Milwaukee remains unbeaten in league play at 3-0 and improves to 6-1 overall.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
RMU owned a slight edge in the first portion of the opening quarter, holding a 7-4 lead after a Dahomée Forgues three-pointer. Milwaukee answered with back-to-back buckets in a three-minute span to grab an 8-7 advantage, but jumpers by Esther Castedo and Natalie Villaflor allowed the Colonials to carry an 11-8 lead into the second quarter. That gap grew to five with a Castedo bucket to open the next frame, but the back-and-forth action continued throughout the half. Nina Augustin's trifecta late in the stanza pushed RMU back ahead at 30-27, only to see Angie Cera answer with a trey of her own with six seconds remaining to make it 30-30 at halftime.

NETS FOR NINA
Senior guard Nina Augustin has now scored in double figures in consecutive contests, as she netted 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting in 34 minutes this afternoon. Augustin, who is three games shy of hitting the century mark for her career, has now tallied 10 or more points in 26 contests, which leads the team.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
While the Panthers regained the lead with an early 4-0 spurt to start the second half, the Colonials held serve and never let the third-quarter gap grow by more than six. Augustin again drained another trey late in the frame to pull RMU within one at 43-42, but Milwaukee responded with an Emma Wittmershaus layup followed by a Megan Walstad block, which led to a Sydney Staver buzzer-beating three to push the difference back to six. That sequence carried into the fourth quarter as the hosts opened the stanza on a 9-2 run to make it 57-44.

YOU GOTTA HAVE SOL
Freshman forward Sol Castro put forth an impressive performance against a strong Milwaukee frontcourt, registering 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal in 29 minutes. Castro finished 4-of-5 from the field and 2-of-3 at the line to reach double-digits on the scoresheet for the first time as a collegian. In the fourth quarter with RMU pushing to come back, Castro went a perfect 3-of-3 on field goals and added a plus-one play with 5:16 remaining.
